I think @Masukuma and @Hardwood and I are probably talking about the same thing but have been caught in the chicken and egg dilemma on what comes first. Are people different first which is why they create different cultures and institutions or are they all the same but different cultures and institutions make them different?

I happen to believe people are inherently different at the core. When Owago Onyiro says "Ujaluo itatumaliza" I believe there is a certain "Ujaluo" in Luos that is quite distinct from "Ukikuyu" in Kikuyus.

Check out this essay by George Orwell who tried to distill out the "U-englishness" of the English.

Nope. A person is a product of their environment. Thus if a msungu, jarabuon (okuyo) etc kid is adopted by a jaluo, he will grow up with luo mannerisms and attitudes. Likewise when Obama, who is genetically 50% luo, was raised as a msungu, he became basically a msungu in his attitude and mannerisms. I wonder if obama has what you are calling ujaluo.

If you go to a high end neighborhood that has both Africans and Wazungus there is very high likelihood that without meeting the people who live there you can tell which houses belong to wazungus simply by looking at the lawns, fences, hedges and gardens. We have different interests which means we take care of things differently.

I have to somehow agree with this because msungus take landscaping and gardening more seriously. Back in their countries you can be sued by the local council or even neigbours if your garden or front yard is unkempt. Note that they do not have concrete fences over there and so a neglected lawn or garden would be an eyesore to all.

Good to see that wananchi huko machinani are also taking landscaping seriously. You don't have to own a mansion for you to landscape your compound...

that is all true. I have read it... by the way... if there was a country that black people kicked out 'mbeberu' it was Haiti. These are all true. but blame is a pie and it has to be shared... in there is a slice for Haitians. the Docs were Haitians... We can shift blame all we want but there is a slice for us in there.

Papa Doc and Baby Doc were puppets of the Americans. Which means they were installed to promote the interests of American government NOT Haitian people and not even American people. If they veered from that mandate, America would have simply had them assassinated, staged a coup and installed a new puppet. This is what America did in Latin America and the Carribbean for much of the 1960s, 70s and 80s. So you can hardly blame the Haitian people for this.

Even in Kenya, if for some reason, Kenya was of strategic interest to the British, they would have come to Kenya, had Kenyatta overthrown and installed their own puppet. And there is nothing we as Kenyans would have been able to do about it. Just like there is nothing Congolese could do when the CIA killed Lumumba, installed Mobutu and propped him up for 30 years. They tried to fight him but with all the weapons and support he was getting from the west, it was impossible to beat him. That is until the cold war ended and the Americans had no more use for Mobutu.

This is so beautifulApplause Applause Applause Applause well balanced even the house looks superb.

Wanachi take landscaping seriously like the Korogocho residents who rehabilitated a section of nairobi river into a people's park

Unfortunately there are lots of people who as Chinua Achebe said are invested in chaos. They make money the more chaotic a situation. Many African countries are "vampire" states, their governments hijacked by gangsters who use the instruments of the state to enrich themselves and their cronies.

Nairobi city council used to have environment officers who used to inspect lawns and hedges. Nowadays they seem allow all manner of bush, kiosks and containers, and motor vehicle garages. Check out the areas around State house and see eyesore bush areas close to the seat of power.
