I tend to differ. It will attract bulk consumers which should be encouraged.

Which bulk consumers are this.Giving discounts when kenya power is buying at the same rate means the margins of kenya power is reduced.

there is surplus power during this hours and the move is good incentive if it can increase the volume

cheapest Hydro is sold by KenGen ~2.31 KES/Kwh. If you add Transmission costs (KETRACO+KPLC) i still don't see Kenya Power making money on that.

Unless the damn are full the Hydro is not run 24 Hrs but only during peak time which will point to Geothermal which runs 24/7/365 being the energy that will be sold and geothermal is sold by KenGen/Ormat @ 8-9 KES/Kwh so @5 KES/Kwh this is loss making to Kenya Power.

Unless Govt subsidy or ERC subsidy from overcharging domestic consumers

the good thing is that, they are starting it as a pilot scheme to see its viability first.Lets wait and see.If it affects kenya power margins, they should stop like they did in 2000.

The 2000 history may just repeat.

Quote:
The night tariff had been introduced in 1999/2000 but squeezed Kenya Power’s margins since all large consumers shifted to the off-peak times with the electricity distributor incurring heavy losses and had to be abandoned.

But let them learn from the pilot and modify charges along the way.

Kenya Power defaulted paying Sh6.4 billion it owes KenGen for electricity delivered in the year ending June, prompting the intervention of top Energy ministry officials.
The electricity distributor failed to pay the bill within the required 40-day credit window in line with their contract, exposing KenGen to credit risk, according to financial statements for the year ending June 2017.

This company is being finished slowly. Is electricity tariff the only reason of our declining investment attractiveness?

This company is essentially a broker of electricity. Its existence only makes electricity expensive to the consumer. It doesn't add any value to the electricity value chain. It shouldn't even exist.
