A colleague of mine has just parted with a K.sh 500 bribe because of a small crack on his windscreen. What is interesting is that instead being issued with a charge ticket the arresting officer insisted on taking him to the police station. He had no option other than to cough the bribe. It seems that implementation of the new rules is turning out to be a great opportunity for our police officers to coerce Kenyans into bribing them.
About the effects of the new rules – up to now, many people in the middle class have been thoroughly harassed by the police. Several of my colleagues have been leaving their vehicles at home afraid to rub the law the wrong way. At my watering hole, numerous patrons that are regulars have not been visiting and the proprietor has been complaining of depressed business. And there are funny conspiracy theories going round. Last week somebody told me that some well-connected individuals are trying to raise campaign money.
that is very very true, unfortunately....happens every election year, arbitrary arrests everywhere, not to mention the myriad of "bonyeza" con games...
