Maybe it's part of their corporate social responsibility.

But traveling to fire scene minus water only to go look for it is tantamount to CSI.

No its not CSR. They negotiate this and are paid together with other bills. The insurance company refunds this payment when processing claims.

@samsa Good to know this. I also wondered how the private could contribute to a public cause. Say for example, remember UG's Aircraft's that went down in Mt.Ke? A private company tropicairkenya.com were part of the rescue team.

Then of course there are those who just volunteer freely, like some countries have civil air patrol, where the civilian patrol a designated area. Some have volunteer search and rescue from within the working population. E.g. a distress call might come through, the members get alerted, they then stop whatever it was that they were doing at work or business, and they get their gear and head to the site. Many lives have been saved, I knew professional who was such a volunteer. I hope that something like this can sprout in KE - Please inform if there is any. I know of red cross.

Then there is ham radio - a radio frequency that has been reserved for radio hobbyists - globally, which can also be used in emergency situations - without paying a cent. There is a small community in KE http://www.qsl.net/arsk/general.htm Hope that the uptake grows.

According to City Council of Nairobi, they will charge for the fire fighting exercise whether you called them in or not. (I think 500k). They will also charge you when they demolish an illegal structure (5k Permanent or 4k temp room). A permit to prune a tree is Kshs 500 and 1k to cut it.
Keep it simple

500 Thousand? If this is true, some folks will not call - if they knew.

They will still come whether you call them or not.I think thats why some residents normally pelt them with stones and chase them away from the scene.

And what will they do if I cant raise the 500K fee?If my entire fortune is consumed in the inferno?
