@maichblack is right here. You divide first after removing the brackets. Brackets mean you solve whatever is inside them INDEPENDENTLY, then the math rules apply as usual.

If you don't believe it just enter =6/2*(1+2)in your spreadsheet and see what the answer will be.

@king, there is no multiplication sign before the bracket, the answer should be one, harrydre is right and Maichmweusi wrong!!!!

Maich is correct. Finish with what is in the brackets first then calculate from left to right.

Now which of the two is true?Using the so called BODMAS.

Second one is correct. That is why it is H.K.E.A.A. approved. You divide first then multiply.

When programming though, both multiplication and division are at the same hierarchy level. If both appear in the same equation, you start with the one on the right.

I beg to differ. If you apply the rule of BODMAS, the first one is correct. You always solve the Brackets first.

My friend, ulipata nini hesabu. You work out the brackets, get 3 and stop there! You don't multiply by 2 because 2 is OUTSIDE the brackets! Next step is dividing 6 by 2; you get 3. You then multiply that 3 with the 3 you got earlier to give you 9!

Followed that?

@richdad, @harrydre, @Marty – The OF you speak about represents power, square root etc. none of which are in this expression! So from Brackets we proceed to Division!

@McReggae a(b + c) actually means a * (b + c). That’s why @Kingfisher is laughing at you.

@Everyone who is confused - @Kingfisher has made life very easy for you. Do exactly what he has advised i.e. “just enter =6/2*(1+2) in your spreadsheet and see what the answer will be.” unless of course you want to argue that ab doesn’t mean a * b and a(b + c) doesn’t mean a * (b + c) in which case I give up!

Alternatively

Visit this site, scroll to the bottom and enter the expression 6/2*(1+2). See my comment to @McReggae.

Simple Exercise

Go to you windows calculator and make sure it is in standard view.

Type 1 + 2 * 3 =
You will get 9!

Switch to scientific view and repeat the same i.e.

1 + 2 * 3
You will 7!

Reason:

The non-scientific calculator expects two operands and an operator. When the next operator is pressed, the expression is immediately evaluated and the answer becomes the left hand of the next operator. Advanced calculators allow entry of the whole expression, grouped as necessary, and only evaluates when the user uses the equals sign.

Moral of the Story:

Some of us are in scientific view while others are in standard view.

Recommendation [And this is VERY serious]:

Some people should not be allowed to help their kids with homework. Otherwise we will end up with rich dad, poor son!!! Laughing out loudly Laughing out loudly Laughing out loudly

If u believe 6/2*(1+2) is the same as 6/2(1+2) then please explain why If u enter 6/2*(1+2) on a spreadsheet, u get 9, but when u enter 6/2(1+2), the spreadsheet (specifically) Excel, advises that the formula is wrong and goes ahead to propose 6/2*(1+2).

What say u about that?

Because 6/2(1+2) is a short form of 6/2*(1+2).

Can you tell us what you believe a(b + c) or better yet 6/2(1+2) means.

Final Attempt

Visit this site and enter the expression exactly the way it is i.e. 6/2(1+2) and see what answer you get.
