Are you looking for good quality sound (being able to hear the singer inhale) or do you just want the matatu boom boom sound?

For the latter, a 1500 PMPO will suffice, brand name is immaterial. Get a 5 speaker system and ensure they are placed well in the room, use the calibrator which comes with it.

For serious quality, build a system component by component. Bose speakers, Sansui amp, Yahama CD player etc. Painstaking, expensive but worth it if you are a music connoiseur(sp).

PMPO is a completely meaningless quantity with no basis whatsoever in engineering. The PMPO figures quoted on equipment are generated in marketing brainstorming sessions! Not in the engineering design labs.... Something like...

Marketing Officer: "the engineers said this thing can produce 30W. That figure sounds too small. Why don't we write 300W?"

Marketing Manager: "No! 300W looks funny. We should put something more wholesome, say 500W"

Marketing Director: "But that will be lower than what our competitors have and we must be recognised as the leaders in this segment, so I say we put at least 1,000W, or 1,500W"

Artwork Designer (a few weeks later): "The figure 1,500W doesn't fit well on the front panel. The number '5' is too broad for that space. I suggest we either use 1,000W or 2,000W"

Marketing director: "No; we can't reduce the number. Use 2,000W. After all I don't like odd numbers"

And that is how the equipment get's a label screaming "2,000W PMPO"

@cardinal; it's all a matter of taste. Go to a shop that has both makes. Be sure to carry a few of your favorite recordings.

Ask the attendant to test them for you. Play a song on one then on the other. Listen carefully and you will be able to hear differences in the quality of output.

Settle on the one that sounds better to your ears.

Forget about looks. Remember that music systems are for listening to not looking at!

And, may I ask why you have settled on these two brands? There are many others, you know!

Sorry but this will never work. What sounds good in the shopping mall will sound completely different in the house (different room size, furnishing etc.). One should note that the home theater systems being pushed through the supermarkets are specifically designed for private "small" dwellings. Think of getting "more" bass when you place the sub-woofer in a corner as opposed to the middle of the room. Same thing here.

What I do agree with is the looks. I've seen more than enough people forking out untold sums for those home theater systems (I'm looking at you Sony) lit up like Christmas trees. They may look good but in the dark trying to watch a movie and you can't dim the amp lights? Yuck!

How does one do research? You hold all factors constant; then change one and observe the effect...

Thus if two systems are tested in the same showroom (i.e., all factors are held constant), there is a good chance that the one that sound better will also sound better when you get home...

But if you test a Sony in one shop and then an LG in another shop; the factors are no longer constant and the results cannot be reliable...

Guys guys, we do a lot of 'research' yet we have an online resource that is so rich! I love reading reviews of particular items that interest me. I start by viewing what various manufacturers have then I drill it down and ready reviews from as many sources as possible. People actually highlight very good aspects both in the -ve and +ve on the product and I can then choose where there is consistency of reporting and now look around that issue raised by many. If many report -ve, chances are it's worth a review.

In Audio, there are different categories - Stereos, Home theatres - personal/custom/specialist equipment. Know what you want. If you are really keen, you can get sufficient info online to make a move. If you need a sound engineer, you need to be investing over 0.5M on the system for the charges to start making sense - and that means you better make use of the system to recoup your value. If you spend over 0.3M on it and listen to it less than 5 hours a week, you are wasting money - just buy the 1500 PMPO (in my former school, this meant Pocket Money Pay Out)

Partially wrong.

The room acoustics play a major role and the one which sounded better in the showroom could sound worse at home.

When looking for the "perfect" sound, untold millions will have be spent and there is no way around this fact. But to get "decent" sound, I would recommend going to the nearest Nakumatt and picking up any system that fits one's budget and then fiddling around with the equalizer once home. The sound will be "ok" but not perfect.

now that we are discussing sound systems....could you guys advice on the components needed for a good complete DJ system.I hope to venture into that area soon...

technics 1200 turntables anytime if you like the vinyl feel...

And the 12-inch singles will come from?

serato scratch live set up for new music,.....

you can see me for soul and old school....on pure vinyl!!!

12" inch originals...

YEP!!! the SL1200 is a boss turntable if you want to get the original feel and if you fancy yourself a scratch DJ, however you will pay top dollar for one of these. For the vinyls....which can be difficult to find, you can use the famous Serato solution where you can play mp3's and scratch using the turntables, you connect all this using a computer and Serato will give you two "signal" 12" vinyls for you to manipulate your sounds, another less popular solution is Traktor scratch pro.
Other brands include sony(YES) Stanton, Numark, crosley, Teac and Oracle.

On the digital side, you can use the industry standard Pioneer cdj2000. That also costs top dollar but it allows you to use mp3 DVD's MP3 cd's and regular audio cd's and it even has a usb port for your regular flash drive with tunes on it. Other cd based "turntables" or just really fancy and hardcore cd players brands include Denon, Stanton, Numark, cortex, gemini and many many more.

In every great dj setup there is a mixer. Most scratch Djs use a two channel mixer with a very flexible crossfader. The most popular is the Rane two channel mixer, Rane are the guys who make the Serato software as well as the hardware.

Digital Djs find the pioneer DJM800 a very popular mixer because of the host of effects it has..this is especially for Trance DJ's like myself who like to make our music sound a little different than the original recording. Top of the range mixer by pioneer is the DJM2000...which has a lot of fancy features, especially when linked with the CDJ2000 cd players. Denon Dj also have a saucy mixer selection my favorite being the dnx-1500. Ohter offerings include Allen and Heath, stanton,Makie, Beringer, and a whole lot more.

So really it depends on what kinda dj you are...scratch or digital.....

finally some wazuans talking the things i like most.... sanity;

just like sl has mentioned above. it really depends on the type of jobs you have as an events person. wedding receptions are the easiest to do, you only need dual cd dj players, just need something like a numark cdn88, with mp3. you put your mp3 music playlist and the rest is history, that also applies to seminars, and other not so busy events. you can get one at credible sounds moi avenue, new or second hand. the price range would be 45-60k. they get the job done. period.

http://www.djdeals.com/i...ment/numarkCDN88MP3.jpg

then theres the next level; single table top digital dj decks, the Pioneers, Denon, Technics DZ1200, these are 2 notches higher, the catch here is the diameter of the jog-wheel, its easier to pull stunts like baby scratches, stabs, cuts with this than with the dual cd decks. they are very good for clubs, and for your case evening parties, or company end of year, or after parties! current industry favourites are pioneer cdj2000 which cost 160,000KES in credible sounds or from a guy called nipul in westi. but, you can get the industry second best cdj900 - 125k, cdj1000mk3 - 100k, cdj850-90k, cdj800mk2-75k. remember this is price/piece. you need two pieces! d'oh!
i have a pair of cdj800mk2, and another of cdj850, they serve me well.

http://pioneerdjusa.com/...pplayers/cdj-2000-1.jpg

last of the players is the world reknown analog magnetic drive turntable, technics 1200 series, has been around since the late 70's and very little has been changed in them, but delivers the same good results over and over, they range from 1200, 1200mk2, 1210mk2, 1200mk3, 1200mk3d, 1200mk5, 1200mk5d, and the best being 1200 mk5g gold series. these are the ones kina adrian, dj pinya, dj john, code red, dj nijo (those who have gone for the untamed party series) and also world reknowned Djs use, or used these. these are used when you are a real mix master, or hiring one....like me! hahaha, anyways, hype, scratch masters use this when they really wnat to show off, or get a deal from his/her current performance.
i have a pair of technics 1210mk2's, i got them both for 45k for ebay.co.uk!!! and came with a relative.

for mixers, i use the rane series, you will never go wrong with these mixers, i use 2 rane-ttm57sl, for the pioneers, and a rane sixty-one for the turntables, they cost much but they never disappoint. 160k for ttm57, i got used ones for 1000$ each, quite a bargain, of course with a relative coming with them, and 140k for sixty-one. had to buy new. they were released in mid 2011!!! they can use serato technology or the good old vinyls and cds.

thats my 2 cents.

drop me a mail at switch[dot]logistics[@]gmail for more advice and deals on decks and mixers.

Any views or experience on Denon? Was biased for an onkyo but seeing some online reviews that the latest onkyos are not as reliable...?
