I think @guru me is genuine. Whereas it's good to be cautious, one will never get rich by always being overly pessimistic and always dismissing any preposition as a con. Email the guy, get the finer details and then make your decision. I have noticed that it's nearly impossible to sell any idea (or anything) on this forum due to the torrents of negative sentiments. Remember the hell the greenhouse guy was put through by forum members? We need to have open minds.

guru me wrote:@hamburglar- The reason we are not doing venture capital or angel investing is because it does not fit our risk profile. Start ups (esp in Africa) are hugely risky even if you diversify your risk based on industry. Not to say that they will not be attractive in the near future. I personally feel that China is increasingly becoming uncompetitive in as far as its key economic drivers (in my opinion) are concerned- cheap labour.
There are very few locales left and I believe Africa, if we can get our act together, is primed to fill this gap. Kenya (still my opinion) with its relative stability, advantageous geographical location (hub for most East and Central African countries) highly educated population and fairly decent English speakers stands a very good chance of benefiting from all the coming changes. I know for a fact that Chinese firms are seriously looking for partnerships in Africa. This is something I feel we should all look into as there will be a lot of cake to go around.
We are not looking at stock or debt markets as we feel we are adequately exposed to these. Yes we would consider leveraged buyouts as long as there is a demonstrable upside to the deal.
Basically what we are interested in is discounted assets (selling below their market values) that someone might have come across but lacked the financial capacity to pursue. It would help if they were more on the "sure deal" side of things rather than the "speculative" side of things.
Once we have a deal that we feel will work, we normally work on a % of profit that way we both have a vested interest in seeing the deal work. Structure of execution is mutually agreed on a case by case basis.
I realise that there are not too many such deals around hence our casting our nets far and wide- which pretty much explains this post. @Guru me.... it think its only fair that you tell us who "we" really are? You sound like someone who can do business, but we also need to know we are dealing with the right people.... You might think this site doesn't have serious people but trust me, you've got great brains and serious members in here, but we have had several attempts to swindle us off some cash and may be that is why people are very skeptical about a new member who immediately sells of an idea and especially without providing enough info. If you are here to sell your business, there is nothing to hide, put the name of your business here, put the physical address so we can walk in when we need to. From what you mention above, and to put it in a more "blunt" way, what you really are looking for is a say people who are going down with mortgages and are in the verge of foreclosures, or someone acting in the verge of desperation to sell off property? Am i right? If so, you have come in abit early... people are still in denial over the repayments and if it is still worth owning a house through mortgage... but your venture will pick if people don't re-evaluate their financial positions.

@Kyt, Philangathropic, and Wendz
We do have a website and we are not briefcase investors. Fact that we do not chose to post our details on a blog doesnt mean that we have refused to provide them.
If at all anyone is serious we have provided an email account through which one can contact us. If we like their idea, we will go ahead to give them our full profile. Consider this something similar to a DNA advert. Our reasons are that we are a fully P/E firm with high networth investors who would rather avoid undue publicity if possible. This are our terms and they are offered on a take it or leave it basis.
@ Wendz- No we are not necessarily looking for foreclosed houses but rather discounted assets. The reason for the undervalued assets may vary - eg information gap by the seller et al. In-fact we would much rather not do foreclosures for ethical reasons - well unless the previous property owner is onboard and benefiting.
@ Sparkly- Sounds like you have something against national schools. Yes I did go to one. No, I am not pursuing an MBA neither do I intend to and I do not consider myself a literally type. I am not rich but I have food on the table and a roof over my head- hec I think I do ok. But the money we invest in is not mine as previously stated.
@ QW- I have concluded that your initials must mean Questionable Witt! I have tried to ignore you but you are clearly drawing me to your intellectual level and beating me with experience.
I am convinced that you keep talking with the hope that you will say something intelligent based on probabilities. From where I stand- nothing yet- so keep at it. I am also convinced that humanity would be better served had your parents not met. Please if you haven't already, do not procreate!!

This is killing me Time is money, so money is time. Money saved is time gained in reverse! Money stores your life’s energy. You expend your energy, get paid money, and store that money for a future purchase made in a currency.

Guru me, I know what you are talking about and I understand private equity firms and how they work. It's very unfortunate that even with a brilliant business idea like this, you have to deal with dimwits like QW who have an IQ smaller than their shoe size. It's hard to help some people who are bound to self destruct anyway..That's why we have darwanism and natural selection..
But be that as it may, I would love to sit down with you and have a chat with you. I will be in Nairobi in February and would love to talk to you some more about this. I do have a large network of entreprenuers and we might have to talk to some of them and find out where opportunities beckon. Just keep doing your good work here, I wouldn't put it past this QW fellow running into a knife and inadvertently depriving us of his amusing ignorance..
