The persecution of homosexuals is the latest in a growing wave of human-rights abuses in Tanzania. The pattern began after the 2015 election of President John Magufuli, who portrayed himself as a corruption fighter. Critics have warned that the country has fallen into creeping authoritarianism since then.

Police have arrested journalists, opposition leaders, foreign mining executives, local businessmen, bloggers, musicians and many others. Several newspapers and radio stations have been banned, and bloggers have been hit with punitive taxes that forced many to shut down. When two researchers from the Committee to Protect Journalists arrived this week to investigate the situation, they too were arrested and held for five hours.

Mr. Magufuli has banned family-planning advertisements, complaining that women who use contraception are “lazy.”

His government has even banned the publication of any statistical data that contradicts the government’s official statistics. A pollster who published surveys showing Mr. Magufuli’s declining popularity had his passport confiscated by the authorities.

The escalating repression is provoking protests around the world. The European Union recalled its ambassador from Tanzania this week, expressing concern about the “deterioration” of human rights and the rule of law. The World Bank announced on Wednesday that it is suspending all visiting missions to the country “with immediate effect.”

JPM’s golden handshake, free flights for ‘hero’ pilot

Dar es Salaam.

When the spirit of cooperation sunk to its lowest point between Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda, leading to the collapse of the East African Community (EAC) in 1977, villains and heroes were made in the drama that ensued. One of the heroes was a daredevil Tanzanian pilot who risked being shot down from the Kenyan skies when he clandestinely took off with an East African Airways plane from Nairobi to Dar es Salaam.

Forty-one years ago, Mr Naziz Peter Mapunda took a bold action for his country, for which he has received a presidential golden handshake of Sh10 million cash and an offer to enjoy free, lifetime Air Tanzania flights to any destination across the country.

The retired pilot was launched into the limelight when President John Magufuli went down memory lane during a function to receive a new Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL) aircraft at the Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) yesterday.

According to President Magufuli, Mapunda took off from Nairobi without clearance from the Kenyan aviation authorities after the then-EAC owned East African Airways, which was based in the Kenyan capital, collapsed at the height of tension among the partner states in 1977.

“He pretended to be landing the plane at the (Nairobi) airport, but decided to take off with it without clearance by the authorities, risking his life for his country. That is patriotism, and we must all emulate him,” the President said.

The plane was operated by East African Airways – the now-defunct airline that was jointly run by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda as one of projects in the 10-year marriage that fell apart due to divergences of policy and practice.

Back then, each member state provided the headquarters for a number of community-wide services. Kenya housed the two of the regional bloc’s major earners—and spenders— the Railways Corporation and East African Airways. Both collapsed. “The plane that Mapunda flew all the way from Nairobi without being cleared for take-off was one of the first planes Air Tanzania used to start its operations,” President Magufuli said. He also suggested that the national carrier considers doing something for the ‘hero’ pilot

Governments all over the world prop up their industries and farms. Including North America and Europe.

Boeing and Airbus would struggle and perhaps even go belly up if they were not propped up by their respective governments. Boeing gets guaranteed contracts at inflated costs from the US military to the tune of $18B.

American farmers are coddled and propped up by states and the federal govt through subsidies.

As for Tanzania, their GDP growth is still much higher than Kenya. Until they start to falter, we have to assume that Magufuli is doing something right.

Your Excellency President JPM, with my esteem humble advice i ask your office to reject this appointment. I also beg your office to stop letting Tanzanian companies being put under any sort of influence or control by Kenyans. Kenyans as people lack merit are incompetent while corrupt and have proven failure even on the running of their own companies at home.

Think of loss making KQ under Naikuni and Nguze, Uchumi under Kipng'etich and Nakumatt under Shah e.t.c. the list of their cultural proof of embezzlement, fraud and mismanagement when given a control of any good company is undebatable and can go on and on.

It's high time to do away with giving them a chance to ruin good gains by our companies especially those public owned as their failure will be disastrous to our economy. Just like the way a renowned Tanzanian political satirist James Gado was unceremoniously shown an exit door through a political influence though he working in a public company NMG, a similar fashion treatment can save Vodacom. Enough with their shenanigans , let us put a stop to being made their experimental Guinea pigs on their project "rundown to takeover". We should always stay vigilant and remind ourselves it's purely an attempt to economical dominance at play.
