@proverB they threw a huge chunk of cash into real estate and stocks (more than 2 billion).. that is bound to yield good results in the near future

I was going through the Fullyr statement for carbacid and i noted that centum does not feature among the 10. They must have sold the entire lot making a killing.

Centum is said to have bought 22.6% stake in carbacid last May 2009..(during slump in stocks..)..thus ought to be on top 10 largest shareholders of carbacid..
http://www.bloomberg.com...hSi1IM&refer=africa

rumours were they were buyin Matiba's stake in it..at that moment..and economic climate then..discussion on wazua was..

http://www.wazua.co.ke/f...aspx?g=posts&t=4415

The fact that centum does not feature in largest carbacid shareholders makes me wonder the details of the transaction..ie cost..sale..gain/loss from it..

rumor had it..MainaT hadn't confirmed..that they paid about Kshs350M for the stake..translating to about 137bob a share..

..how much did they off it at?..i see from their books they pocketed a Kshs469million gain from disposing quoted stocks..note 8..
..carbacid could be here?

ANd bytheway..I thought it is a cma requirement that when you are a major shareholder of a company and intent on selling your stock u must notify market?

--why negative cash from operations?

They hold the carbacide shares through Rasimu Ltd a subsidiary of theirs. and they own20.89% or 7,098,974 shares so that gain couldn't be from Carbacid Investements Ltd.

About the negative cash flow from operations, i think you should neglect that because its treated in the notes as there's a gain in disposal of equity holdings.

True RASIMU LMT. are the major shareholders with 20.89% (7,089974 shares). Thanks for the clarification.

@msimon, guru.. Thanx

"...Last year the company through Rasimu Limited — a wholly owned subsidiary — invested Sh350 million for 22.6 per cent stake in listed gas-maker Carbacid that earned the company the single largest dividend income of Sh327 million from the quoted equity business line..."
http://www.businessdaily.../-/135fq1f/-/index.html

On other news..they cut down on their quoted stocks holdings.. hence the incredible growth in PBT..Gains on Disposal..that is largely a one off thing.. so don't expect the same next year...however..the dividend is sssswwweeeeettt!!! warrrrr!
.

bytheway..them idiots have recouped their investment within a year just thro the didvidend??? damnn! Matiba must be cursing.

@guru... real estate..where its at..conservative move..hope the upuuzi about "real estate bubble" is just that..upuuzi.
..otherwise..love their prime land acquisitions..though i'm sure they paid quite handsomely for them..compared to had they thought of it in 2008-2009.
"...more than Sh2.5 billion investment in the purchase of two parcels of land through Closeburn Estate Limited where it acquired 100 acres in Runda, and Pearl Marina where it has acquired more than 200 acres in Entebbe, Uganda...."

..interimresults.. most sound valuation of a stock uses full year results to value a stock.. hence currently..debate is..with these half year figures..what's the likely full year figures goin to be like?..answer that question then compare with the current share pricing..

drama is if 23bob is too cheap..or fair valuation..and what do you risk losing by buyin now...

thus.. price likely to inch up gradually..as guys get convinced its ok to buy..by the time full year results are out any potential good news will have been factored in..

so..buy..hold till feb..or thereabout..

Good results and bound to get better. The investments in real estate will bring in pretty good returns once the properties are developed. On the other hand, I do not expect too much upside on their quoted portfolio by Mar-2011, as the NSE index is unlikely to go up as fast in the next 6 months as it did between April-September.

It is an issue of how the associates are valued. In the consolidated (Group)accounts, this is done on the basis of share of net assets. For the company the Directors use their own valuation of what they reckon the associates to be worth. I would go for the more conservative valuation as per the group accounts, as this is backed by IAS rather than what is in the company. I do not agree with the Directors valuation of the associates. Still, it is a nice counter to own.
