What is with this generation of Job opportunity seekers.

The nature of my job requires that most that visit our institutions are sent to me.

96% of the male interveiwees do not wear a suit and tie. Ladies, the plugging necklines and above the knee hemlines. Please.

Did I miss something? Attending an interview in Jeans and Safaricom T-shirts for an opening in accounts and administration?

Sheng is not yet recognized as an official language, the new constitution not with standing.

for heavens sakes ladies and gentlemen, do not attend an interview if you cannot speak English. Please. Thank you.

I am sorry to say this but if you cousin is a she, then am afraid she might have to hit the mattress with these morons. By 10.00 all lodgings are taken as the potential "employers" exploit the job seekers! The kenyan job market is a screw yard.

Again she should hide the MBA certificate for now. These so called execs don't have papers, they fear people with papers bcoz they join their Orgarnizations to be their bosses, So you will not even be shortlisted. So advice your cousin to use the CPA certificate to enter an organization then unleash the other certificate afterwards.

How misleading!!!! Liar Liar Shame on you Shame on you
1. No, she does not have to hit any mattress. She should never lower her dignity to that level. And in any case, she is well qualified!
2. Why hide her MBA cert, she is well qualified! She will soon meet a serious employer who's been looking for someone just like her!

Let her not give up! There are indeed job opportunities she can fit in. As long as she keeps looking!
....above all, to stand.

sometimes they play reverse psychology...show up for the interview decently and professionally dressed.

a week later, the jeans, tshirts and beach sandals check in....quite frustrating and an eye sore.
Am paid in Kshs.

I stand by what I had said. In this country institutions are not working. Why do you think 2,500 employees are going to loose their jobs in education ministry? They were hired irregularly. You cannot get a job in this country through conventional means. And that is the truth.

How were you all hired in your current jobs. You may lie, but you know the truth in your hearts.

Believe it or not, i took the directory, checked out the institutions i would want to work for (many i can confess) sent out my CV via Post Office, was called for interview and rest is as they say..... Same as what happened in my previous workplace. The others before that i would drop my CV personally coz i didnt have money to post them.....

1. Visited a cybercafe and researched on how to write a winning CV
2. Wrote a winning CV and winning cover letter
3. Made as many copies as I could of the 2 documents
4. Trekked thro' Industrial area dropping off applications
5. Realised that most of the companies I was interested in only accepted online applications.
6. Accepted a salary-less job that gave me free access to the internet.
7. Applied for any and all jobs I could find online - had luxury of tweaking CV each time.
8. was called for so many interviews that my employer started complaining
9. Passed most of the interviews, received 15 job offers..
10. Chose 1.
NB: All this within 2 months. No bribes, No godfathers, No mattress. My former classmates who were waiting on their godfathers were still waiting two years after I got my first job.

Wrote a CV, helped by a former campus mate whom i consider my mentor.
Befriended the directory.
send out as many blind applications as possible, even where no job was adverstised.
Walked up and down industrial area handing out job applications.
Befriended the estate newspaper seller; every morning I'd join the other guys to read the newspaper(I went straight to the vacancies section) coz I couldnt afford a paper.
was called for many interviews. failed. but every failure was a learning experience. Id tweak my apllication letter, Cv and interview skills.
saw this job advert one morning. Applied. was called for interview. passed. was called for medical. passed. the rest is history.

Let her not despair. I 'tarmacked' for 1year, 4 months. But the job that i finally got was better off than all the other jobs id failed interviews for.
I learned that those failures were preparing me for this good job that i have. People still ask me..who did I know to get in.

Kwani lazima you work for those institutions.. Personally, I did not bother applying for a job at any institution where such practices took place.

I believe the only reason anyone would pay for a job is that he/she knows that they're not qualified for it.. or are incompetent.

A strathmore MBA..

Networking, networking, networking.

Am sure most of her classmates @strathmore are working somewhere, some of them as managers or influential people.. why not talk to them?

And, no, you do not have to pay someone to get a job, I never did, and i have turned down about 3 offers in my short life. You dont have to sleep with the prospective employer, either.

Most of all, ask yourself, what do i want to do in 5 years? Then look for a job that will help get you there. Sometimes it pays to be choosy!

I worked as an unpaid intern for a year, got the experience I needed and hit the job trail. Used the directory and the internet, I sent out applications over mail like 10 or so per day. Attended lots of interviews but picked the one I liked most.
My boss became my mentor and when it was time to move on, he cheered me on, the same has happened in other places.
I have never paid anyone for a job and have had headhunters approach me severally.

The key I believe is to narrow the focus down to an industry and specialize in a role then grow from there. MBA are for managers who have work experience. It's a pity universities recruit anyone who can afford to pay but if she has no work experience, working as a volunteer for a few months is better than staying at home.

It is actually possible to get a good job by persistence and not losing sight of what you actually want.

Your cousin has the good papers but little experience, so she may have to settle for any job (even if not well paying) that allows her to gain some experience in accounts.

MBA qualification - She should be proud of it but not use it to justify demanding an overly high starting salary. The MBA qualification might be just what sets her apart from other applicants for the same position.

In a nutshel;:

1. Send out CVs (including for internships) but focus to gain experience in Accounts or whatever she specialisied in her MBA
2. Give herself time perhaps9 months to one year to gain solid work experience
3. Start Job-hunting after 9 mnths to one year (by then, her good qualifications will be backed up by some work experience) for a middle level management/superivisory position

With jobs in the Kenyan market, persistence and a positive mind-set is important. From all the interviews I have attended, there is always something new to learn about myself and how to approach interviewers.

I dropped cvs all over for 4 months until i got tired of dropping.I figured that if there was a job out there for me,then one of the many cvs would get me that job.but then it took longer before the job interview calls came.
Meanwhile,i had bills to pay so i decided to get into consultancy business of doing small biasharas their accounting n it helped a great deal.
Tell your cousin that while she is waiting for that job,she can create a job out of her talents n what she learned in campus.
Its about time we started thinking of self employment....u dont have to have 1million to start.start small.

this link is very enlightening, ati if you resume consists of " am proficient in Microsoft office" then you have no marketable skills. knowing how to create a document and edit a power point isn't something to brag about.those are things every employer expects every jobseeker to have, like knowing how to pronounce your name
