I partly blame it on piracy....nowadays at kshs. 50 u can get a clear copy of a movie that has not even premiered so why waste kshs. 300 to kshs. 550 on it,,the only reason those uptown cinema haven't closed is probably coz guys who go there have extra chums to spend.

i agree with you fully. in one of the uptown cinema a movie ticket goes for 600. two tickets would cost 1200 then add pop-corns etc. thats a cool 2k on just one movie... with that cash you can buy 40 movies {including the one that you are going to watch!!}.

The cinema experience is good but i think the cost is too high. What would happen if the Cinemas adopted a low-cost model like that for Zain..Think .....more clients....more business

And even after parting with your 2k you might get into the movie theatre and realize you are less than 20 guys. Now that really kills the 'cinema experience'. You are left wondering why you didn't just get the movie [bootleg or otherwise] and just watch it at home - more comfy. If you are a movie buff, get yourself a big screen TV - if you don't already have one, a nice DVD player and a truck load of 50/= movies. We even have wazuans who can deliver the movies to you.

I agree with you, the Bharti/Equity model would work. Kenyans don't have a lot in terms of recreational and entertainment facilities. I'm sure many would love to go watch a movie once in a while but not when it costs approx. 5k for a family of four [inclusive of lunch] - Dad, mum and two kids.
Never count on making a good sale. Have the purchase price be so attractive that even a mediocre sale gives good returns.

@Magigi, so what business was there at Eastlands Cinema? Was it also taken over by some church?

Enyewe i am now nolstagic when i rem the days of Kenya Cinema, this was the location for my 1st movie-date, it was also my first "BIG" screen experience, Broken Arrow was the movie (what was i onto, taking a chick to watch a movie bout missile heads)truly unfortunate some good memories there...

@maichblack..to be honest i can't rem the last-time i went to watch a movie in Kenya 8 yrs + but frankly speaking i am shocked at those figures. When did it spiral out of control.I know fast-food is damn expensive (more than the west) i took my 3 nieces and daughter to one of them Nandos and i was surprised the total the lady at the till gave me, jeez!! for a lousy pizza, chicken, fries, ice-cream & soda really!!

The greatest danger in times of turbulence is not the turbulence; it is to act with yesterday's logic.

I think the cinemas wouldn't close shop were the mamas able to pay for their own tickets, popcorns and coffee.
Forward thinking jamaa would rather take her gal away in 14-falls and spend KES. 500 instead of 2500 at Westgate!
Pray Pray Pray

I once took a mama to the Junction and watched a movie which she insisted we watch, though I didnt like the movie...tickets plus popcorns = Kes 1600
Pray Pray Pray

Then as we came down on the ground floor she saw a coffee house and waylaid me to buy her capuchino plus a snack which set me back 1K!
Pray Pray Pray

And the lady was working at Steadman.

That was the last day we met!

I once went to Kenya Cinema on a loose Friday evening. Nilishangaa sana. I was ALONE! I watched the low quality movie alone for about 45 minutes when someone else joined me in the hall. Needless to say, sijawahi kanyaga huko tena.

I do Silver Bird now, though it's been a minute. It's too expensive for a movie you're chancing! You only go there for movies that you know 100% will blow you away. During the days of 20th Century movies for 200bob, we would go for random movies. Sikuhizi... too much.

....some movie theatres like Cameo even had rats !!!! ABC Cinema used to specialize in Kungfu Movies and was extremely popular...

Eastlands Cinema, Embassy, Cameo, Odeon, Globe and others have all been converted to places of worship. This tells you where the true business opportunity is - start a church.

@annsal

Am not sure how one 'shades some light' (and its popular with the young generation)...... my late primary school teacher (RIP), though he didn't proceed with his colonial schooling beyond class 8, always insisted on 'shed some light'.... and i think he was right..... unless those who went to post colonial college think otherwise... Though i also appreciate languages evolve...

And she put on such a very heavy Russian jacket that my browsing didn't get to anything worth mentioning here.
I was kept browsing the the jacket the whole 2 hours!
The only sweet memory of her I still hold is her name; Judymylce A
