what will happen if, safcom also lowers its prices to the level of zain and yu? i bet someone will close shop or sell again to another owner

@jamani thats why i said its a LOSE LOSE situation for safcom because if they lower their rates this will seriously dent their revenues and profits and voice counts for 70% of their revenues. If they don't lower their rates they lose market share to zain... So my advice is SELL

@guru, i dont think so, once they lower someone will start complaining about monopoly before closing shop, it will be a true monopoly and the rest you know, volumes will do the work due to large numbers to generate revenue, not as high but good enough for profitability.

@jamani,
Ur too confident with safcom 4r ua own good. Just browse Bharti airtel website (the Indian one) n u'll begin to understand the competition safcom is up against. Also note the sh.12 billion warchest they'll invest in Kenya.

Safcom can NEVER lower their charges to the level of Zain. Its painful but its true.
Conventional thinkers waste time building shelters when they are unnecessary and then have no shelters when they need them the most. Socionomists do the opposite.

@Mnandii, Yes am confident of safaricom, they will reduce the interconnect price as required by CCK thats a new rule they have to. I know safaricom thinkers are working on something and once its ready it will make Bharti feel the heat and just concentrate on other parts of africa, thats what happened to celtel and zain. Unlike India and even Africa Kenya is a different market and its not approached from the basis that a company is successful in thier country and think they will win here, i remind you of the brewer from SA enormous company with lots of money and investments and world class quality products. People changed to thier products (two beers for a price of one)the rest you know... someone closed shop

The issue is one of 'pride' for Bharti Airtel... They cannot be seen to 'fail' in Kenya which is their Africa HQ...

In the battle between the 2 elephants (Bharti & Safaricom)... the minnows Orange & YU will be toast!

Yu has dropped rates to 3/- too + sms @ 0.50 lakini they dont have the impact that Zain/Bharti has...

@qw isn't safcom the master of the 5/- bob economy, heck they even have a 5 bob scratch card. Zain tactics are wanting why cut prices while their scratch cards are not available. Simply not enough outlets stock them.safcom scratchcards you find at kiosks, butcheries, mamambogas etc. Ati their sim cards ran out when executing their killer move ha ha ha ha.

It says alot about thier strategy and poor planning, its not the capacity link issues with safcom, now sims cards next will be scrath cards then IN-capacity, the list is endless

Zain were to launch 3g by july, what happened? The voice market has overheated but SAf are way ahead in data provision.By the time they find out data is the place to be,Saf will still be leading with 4g and wimax...they will always be playing catch up.
The utimate goal of investing is to buy low sell high;if we re-write this core equation in psychology terms it becomes buy fear sell greed.

They never expected the kind of response. Of all previous price cuts, this has had real impact. Safcom dealers are saying their revenue has gone down significantly. This is a real battle

@jamani my point exactly. They don't seem to have put much thought and planning, just spur of the moment action. Why not recruit more dealers, make more simcards and scratchcards first. Btw there is a full page advert in the nation reading "masaa ya kubamba yanakuja" in a green font.

Unless they lower the rates to as much as yu or Zain, or reduce their data costs drastically, they will not have ''bambad'' anyone. Since 70% of Safaricom's revenue comes from voice, if they go that low, the likes of 2012 can then buy the share at 3.50/=

Wouldn't it be ironic that the market leader with 80% is reacting to a much smaller players moves? Philip Kotler will have to rewrite his book!

Zain's issue with the data is not the cost, it is the speed. They have to move fast and roll out the 3G
