Just to add a twist to this- The same containers can be used as temporary shelter during events (e.g. the MSa marathon,safari rally) as in lease them to people who require temporary accomodation (like furnished containers). Anyone on ideas on how else they can be used?

A friend of a friend who has a container converted to a fish & chips joint (kiosk like).

Its on Tausi Rd in Westlands off Muthithi Ave/road. The finished product is not top class,but it works well and has been feeding (lunchtime) the community for a few years now.

I also hear that some Aircraft leasing firm @ Wilson airport have container offices with some sort of false roof to keep water from settling on top. Anyone seen these offices?

@Mwatha,

The roofs are not temporary per se.They are made of iron truss with the sheets secured by hook-bolts.Very firm.You can decide what best suits your design.Rusting should not be a serious issue since many are made of Al.

@Kazee,

Prisons and police staff.....Talk to Kalonzo.

@Dexter,

Joining one or more containers is made easy by the fact that this containers are anchored on steel channel boxes which fit almost to perfect,Any gaps left thereof can be taken care of by introducing a cover and thus making an expansion joint or alternatively have it.TIG welded.A do it yourself process if you have basic engineering background.Partitioning can be done with aluminium angle lines or timber and the walls finished off with blockboards of a veneer of your choice.

@Sheii/Mwatha

Am trying to get a link to a company in UK which is making slightly larger containers for homes.You can buy and hire them to ship loads to MSA and then pick them from there for your use.Get you the link soon...

@dexter,

Am still doing lots of fact finding and i haven't done a lot of legality checks but my initial intentions is to put up a two or three roomed rural retreat house.Even if i decided on putting up within a town or city,here are a few facts the authorities would not resist;

1.The said containers are ISO certified.( Show me one house in the entire Emba which is ISO certified )

2.They are constructed of 14 gauge corrugated steel side & roof panels,with 7 gauge tubular steel frames. One and a half inch thick marine grade plywood floors,vandal-proof locking steel doors,water-resistant welded seams,and all weather paint.

3.Great resistant to disasters and can resist 200Km/h wind when anchored and 150km/hr unanchored.........

Are this not enough reasons??
