That depends on available ingredients. What is available in your case?

Its going to one year since I started the project. Its a good venture but laden with challenges, feed being the main one.but you can be creative in what you feed them. For marketing, the demand is higher than supply, but be weary of middle men.

@ vestor What is the main challenge on the feeds? I am interested in doing pig farming too. Do you get your feeds from farmers Choice? What of the pens, any specs? design? availability of water?

The quality of feed is inconsistent add that to scarcity of raw materials if you are to make your feed. I don't get from farmers choice, though their feed is better and more affordable compared to others. for pens, it depends on the number you intend to keep, e.g mothers. But a 10X12 ft house can fit a mother and her children, three to four mothers alone, or 8-10 growing piglets. Water is very important, you cant do without.

Thanks vestor for this info. So where do you get your feed from? Where do you sell the pigs?

@impunity, what do you mean by 222 breeds?

I have the farmers choice breed, they mature in 6-7 months, but I want to shorten it to 5-6 months. I mix my feed depending on the availability of ingredients

pig feed is determined by age of the pigs.

for piglets, starter/creep feed is better.

then growers for those above three months,

sow and weaner may be used for both weaning and for mothers

and pig finisher to ready them for market.

feeding them on minerals including cotton seed cake, fish meal, sunflower etc acccelerates growth rate.

farmers choice mainly blends the feeds as sow and weaner which had all the nutrients for all ages.

@wanjy FC= Farmers Choice just go to their pig unit and they will be happy to give you acurate and practical info from scratch to market incl. stats.
You can source your parent stock even feeds from them & (listen to this) guarantee you market if you meet their standards.

Now that is a piece of cake, isn't it?

well i wouldnt rely on Farmers choice for the profitability information. My mum was once a farmer and she gave up for personal reasons. But basically they collect your pigs and giveu the price later. I will be starting a farm with pigs among other animals in a years time so if you are still looking for that accurate non-big-corporation info check out my blogspot - http://kenyanenterpreneur.blogspot.com/

Never stop dreaming!
