@horton You are entitled to your opinion.. so i give up trying to get through to you... but i think one last piece of advice will do... markets reflect upcoming events for a company in the share price... if whats coming is positve shares rise, if whats coming is negative shares fall.. that said, KPLC is up more than 22%since 26th FEB.... I suggest you find out whats not working with your "complicated" arithmetic.. Mark 12:29 Deuteronomy 4:16

All im saying is when companies convert pref to common, they have something called a conversion ratio and that is what we dont know. And Well thanks but no thanks!! I dont believe markets are "perfect" as you put it! im not a "mere speculator" that rides on market sentiments! Thats pure herd mentality Thanks and goodluck

@horton if this were "herd mentality" then this stock would have crashed because most investors are thinking like you... the guys entering this stock are not "speculators" but simply investors who have full knowledge on GOKs intentions for the copmany... i dont know a single broker or analyst who wouldnt suggest this company to their client... oh yeah and by the way the 3sh dividend paid was an interim not a final dividend... good luck to you too!!! Okay genuine appreciation guys. So from the aforegoing: --Gov will continue holding big percentage of KPLC in near future --Gov will need to sell off holding in near future --Stock has one of the lowest PEs at the moment --Stock will continue to make profits; though marginal due to outside pressure
My conclusion: Can offer good return; but higer risk. @mkonomtupu approach of taking stock as speculative makes sense for me.

@horton can any other company with an abundance of resources compete successfully with it?

kitie wrote:@horton can any other company with an abundance of resources compete successfully with it? I think for sure, as personally, KPLC is very inefficiently run. from unreliable power supplies to poor emergency services. Infact this brings up a pretty good question, if a company, hypothetically e-on or someone setup shop in Kenya as a direct competitor to KPLC and slash the over-inflated bills, these guys would go out of business pretty quick. Since independence only something like 20% of the country has power!! Have u been to the coast of late?? Power fluctuations are just out of control. Compared to even 3rd world countries, eg ghana, senegal KPLC is not yet up to speed. PS: this is a monopoly by default not because of competitve advantage

@Horton more than one utility provider in a small country like kenya would cause much greater inefficiency... KPLC is really doing alot to improve and fix this problem.... Mark 12:29 Deuteronomy 4:16

@Kitie and in total agreement with Horton, you can look through a company's annual reports and their financial statements but there has also got to be something said for how the company is run. if your concerns are with the company, if it is a good business, the stock will eventually follow.

I can almost guarantee, at the next board meeting, the board would have a mention to the hue and cry emanating from the public - that's the way life is. Remember the not too forgotten Kengen issue. Outside pressure = gov + public interest But on reading your last comment, guru267 wrote:KPLC is really doing alot to improve and fix this problem.... I must respectfully challenge your perspective as one who has a stake in it.

@muganda and @tulip i also have a large part of my portfolio in this company... they have done and are doing a substantial lot to solve their inefficiencies INEFFICIENCY: The blackouts and flactuations are due to the high demand for power and limited supply... SOLUTION: Distribution of energy saving bulbs to lower the demand and entering power purchase agreements with IPP's... INEFFICIENCY: Losses arising from inadequate payment of bills and vandalism SOLUTIION: prepaid meters and increased vigilance on assets.. INEFFICIENCY: slow connection rate of the population. SOLUTION: GOK setting up KETRACO to assist with connection of new customers... and thats only three of them.... Mark 12:29 Deuteronomy 4:16

I own part of this company however small its is but all the gains I get eg dividends and occasional capital gains are all erroded by the excessive electricity bill I pay every month. I am not proud at all to be a shareholder of my company that exploits me then pays me back something I call too little and has no match for the bills I pay...... yawa! Mpaka lini?

@guru, dont get me wrong, all im saying is that, if it was a normal company with the same par value as a common stock then the conversion ratio would be 1:1, but in this case there is also politics, being a parastatal, they might do it in the favor of the public and that would be brilliant for the shareholder... however, if they went the normal way, then the minority shareholders(which are very few) are royally screwed!!
Personally, I worked out the Pros and the Cons, added in a mixture of the politics and the uncertainty and this wasnt a stock for me...as someone said earlier, we are all different with different hopes and expectations....
But if it does work out as you had put it, ie 794M divided by 185bob=4.3M shares, then hey good for you....the sore losers would be the govt and more so, the kenyan taxpayer... but at this point, just too many variables to actually say what is going to happen.
