This is very serious........Mumias is requested to shed while fossil fuel IPPs are allowed to generate......??......This can only be for kickback purposes and it goes to show that some of this IPPs are not in honest business......Oh well then, the fuel levy on our power bills is here to stay. One more question to ask during the two upcoming AGMs for Njoroge and Kidero. Something does not smell right here as the old man about town has avverred.
On a different note,I am with you Njunge on a significant price rise on Sukari tamu. I anticipate Profits for H1 2010 will be upwards of 400% on H1 2009. That should really create some buzz!

@mwanahisa + Njunge - KPLC has to balance the loads... It is quite technical but pushing power from Mumias to Mombasa may be more expensive then using local (Rabai-based) IPP coz of system losses. Also there is 'load balancing' between sections & interconnections... This cud take an entire book... But there is a case for trying to maximize using Mumias power first... also there is need to develop industries/users in Nyanza/Western to use the Mumias power locally... @VVS, I may not be in the know about system loses and all that but one thing is clear;.....The difference in prices is so huge to justify this and indeed,if this was to be the case, then we would expect electricity from Turkwell to be much more expensive than that from Mumias (Where are the number crunchers?)........your other suggestion is rosy and won't happen any time soon.......Mumias to become a power vendor?.........It will be a cold day in hell but well,if it ever happens, you and i would laugh all the way to the bank. @Mwanahisa, I agree but don't you think 400% is a little far fetched?. Has anyone received the Audited Accounts?
To be honest,i wasnt impressed by its performance though there almost double on capital expenditure this year (hopefully they can translate that into profits in future)... From the summary on performance highlights compared to 2008
Sugar Cane Processed (- 11%) Gross Turnover (-1%) Sugar Production - (-14%) Profit after tax - (+24.5%) Rendement - what is this? (-0.3%) Earning per share - (+0.26%) Net cash from operating activities higher than last year.
Income Statement Revenue - lower operating income - lower Cost of sales - higher Gross profit - lower Expenses - lower Profit before Tax - lower taxation - credit Profit for the year - higher
Seems our 'profits' this year are only supported by cost cutting and the tax credit. This is not sustainable in the long run especially with all the major capital expenditure in the future to diversify.

@Njunge - Turkwell produces much more than Mumias... also the transmission lines/infrastructure was built to support Turkwell's production... Mumias production is being sent on reinforced lines to Nakuru & Eldoret. I doubt it gets to Nairobi. Of course, unlike 'discrete' goods... you can't 'mark' electrons... My point is that most (larger) industries that run at NIGHT are in Thika or Nairobi or Athi River. For the full (better) use of electricity at night,we need to develop users in Western/Nyanza. Nairobi is better supplied by the (to be developed) RV geothermal plants that produce steady power & can be varied depending on demand. Add 500m for the entire year from stima and expect PBT of 2.6B from the 1.2B. There is nothing wrong with load shedding, everyone is paid for capacity,so Mumias due to the nature of their plant are the easiest to shut- low capacity cost. Hydro is good for keeping costs low, fossil fuel engines have a high capacity cost.

@VVS, I am yet to get your point. The transmission line from MSC to where it connects the national grid is less than 40Kms.Would that still count?secondly,i believe power consumption in Western and Nyanza exceeds MSC capacity by far.Consider the fact that Nzoia,West Kenya,Kibos,Muhoroni,Chemelil and Sony sugar are 24 hour industries and are in this region.(of course there is lifeless Pan Paper mills,Webuye). @sheep, Never say never. @Kausha, Turning off a diesel generator takes a key, depressurising and raising a steam plant is a different ball game.......In all fairness,it is easier to keep the steam plant running than the other way round......and don't mess me up...lol Old man about town.... @Wendz; Full results are out; got mine jana. Interesting note from the Chairman,on p13: 'The court case that had halted the TARDA project was concluded. The board is looking into possibilities of progressing the project' And Kidero says on p21: '...the company is in the process of sourcing funds and partners so that the project can commence' Isn't now a good time to take positions? Behind the gardens...Behind the wall...Under the tree (Including: Red...Dark Blue...Yellow) Nothing is real unless it can be named; nothing has value unless it can be sold; money is worthless unless you spend it.
