However these religions don't need to sell themselves as fountains of peace. An interesting observation is that most monotheistic non-ethnic religions are always out on the prowl to proselytise people. When was the last time you heard a hindu guy encourage you to believe what he/she does? @masukuma, have you ever seen a nyeuthi Hindu? Have you seen nyeuthi Jewish? That’s not the question I asked... I asked - when was the last time you heard a Hindu encourage you to believe what he/she does? Umeambiwa na wangapi? Secondly- your classification of religions is wrong. Yes - there are animist beliefs (no two animist beliefs are the same) - some believe in ancestors , there are polytheistic religions like the Roman, Greek, Hindu. There are religions that have just ancestors and persons who went before you. There are monotheistic religions like Christianity, Islam, Judaism and those random middle eastern religions like Samaritans, Yazidis. Buddhism is not a religion with a “god” per se. many atheists practice Buddhism. Thank you for expounding on the classification: Animist, polytheistic, monotheistic etc etc. I never meant the two were the only ones. Assuming we have narrowed in to the Monotheistic religions, which I called semetic, this is the focus now. According to Islam, the three religions Judaism, Christianity and Islam they have a common origin. And we in Islam we do not really consider these three as different. According to Muslim belief there is no such thing as Judaism, and there is no such thing as Christianity, we term them all Islam, meaning the teaching of Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad (peace be upon them) was Islam. And we consider all of them Moses, Jesus and Muhammad were as Muslims. So what it means is that the teaching of these three great personalities, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad was one message and these terms Judaism and Christianity did not exist in the lifetime of the people who are supposed to have propounded the faith. So for example, if Moses was alive today and we asked him "what is your religion"... he would not answer that my religion is Judaism because this is the term which Moses never heard. This word Judaism is not in the old Testament, it is not in Torah, or Talmud... It is not to be found anywhere. But we expect Moses to say my religion is the religion of total submission to Almighty God, one word for this is Islam. Similarly, for Christianity, the same principle applies. Jesus Christ in his life time he did not hear the word Christianity, nor did he say I am a Christian. If Jesus was here, in is second coming, and if we asked him "O Jesus, what is your religion"... I do not expect him to answer "Christianity" because if he did, we might have to ask him what church do you belong? Is it Roman Catholic? Are Seventh Day Adventist, or is it Jehovah's witness? What Christianity do you belong to? So in other words, we expect Jesus to say that my religion is the religion of total submission to God's Will, and one word for that in Arabic is Islam. This is quite unlikely. I don't think I came across the term "religion" in the old testament and you will need to explain what it is to him and he would be surprised about this concept! His beliefs were the beliefs of his people. His God was the God of his people - the house of Israel... not a shared God. No other people could worship this God. Much later the Samaritans had their own religion. very similar to this thing we call Judaism and they had their own beliefs and worship places. There are more monotheistic religions than just the 3. Thank you for giving another name for religion. You can substitute that with belief. Thank you mentioning the word monotheistic (monotheism). In the fundamentals of these monotheistic beliefs, there is no difference as taught by the prophets Moses, Jesus and Muhammad pbut. There is no separate God for Moses and separate God for Jesus, there is no separate gGod for Muhammad... there is not separate God for an Indian and a separate God for Nyeuthis and separate God for Chinese... Almighty God is one, the Creator of everything in heaven and earth. This is teachings of all of the prophets. They all taught that we shall not worship any other god but Almighty God alone. We submit. And one word for that is aslam, Islam. The one God, The Almighty who dwells on Mt Kenya, not mecca. Thaaai.....

For example the BJP India has sought proselytes for yoga across continents.

God and religions remains the most ancient human inventions. Add to that some ancient texts declared as holy and you have a perfect human control tool at literally no cost. You expend your energy, get paid money, and store that money for a future purchase made in a currency.

Kindly check on the Dvaita tradition in Indian philosophy and see how the scriptures are recognized. Particularly the Mimamsa and the 'enumerationists'. And also, if we study ancient scripts we find that they describe a human model that can receive and transmit information by virtue of possession. Such possession can be shown to be true in emerging theories of mind. My suspicion is that we have lost the meanings of ancient symbols to the degree of totally misunderstanding of religion. When we allow for such origins of religion, then we not only realize that Islam is a true religion, but there's also a post-Islam world. Not forgetting post-christian religious life.

It's funny that God could find it fit to talk to Ancient humans but not to us today. I know he works in amazing ways but bible, Koran etc or any book for that matter is the worst form of communication he could choose. Why not speak to us in person instead of asking Moses to see him secretly in a mountain yet he could easily speak to all of us at one go (the book says it's because of our sins, we are unfit in his presence - but if you used your head it's clear that you did not create yourself. The creater should have been more careful and thoughtful in his creation to create a more perfect being that could please him) I used to take the bible serious until I found numerous contradictions and absurd laws no single believer could practice especially in the old testament. No wonder they invented the new testament to create more relevance. Unfortunately if you find the period gap between when first gospel was written and when Jesus lived there is over 20 years gap which makes you wonder if they had such a good memory to remember all that. I must confess I am not well versed in Islam but if you disprove one deity, you disprove them all. Finally for those who knew our own Kenyan God "Wanyonyi" who died of malaria. Don't be amazed if 100 years from today people will believe that he was indeed God! Time is money, so money is time. Money saved is time gained in reverse! Money stores your life’s energy. People who try to argue against religion by siting its contradictions and finding errors in religious texts miss the whole point of its existence and its power. The power and relevance of religion is not in the texts but in what it does and means to its believers.

What this video also got wrong is showing individual members of each religion arguing and disagreeing with each other. While this does happen it is much less common. What is more common is hundreds, thousands, millions of people from the same religion living together and just doing their thing gaining confidence and finding comfort in their beliefs that seem very weird to any outsider. The stuff that religion is able to stir in peoples hearts is unparalleled. For good or for ill, there is power there that is hard to describe. Whether it is the suicide bomber strapping the bomb to his body or the guys who run Strathmore school and Unversity or Carey Francis coming to Kenya to teach African boys........ religion stirs people to action.

It's true that religion is a good bonding tool among the members who practice it. My argument though or at least the point I was making is that there is no other utility beyond this life. It is not magical nor is it glamorous. Though we can choose which religion to belong to, it is also a great source of misery to a good number of people. Some examples include people getting taken advantage of in this world say by politicians like @Kusadikika noted who are quick to remind believers that they will get rewarded in heaven! Others kill fellow humans expecting to get concubines in next life! Others kill themselves in caves in religious suicide to quicken their redemption! All I wish we can do more is to acknowledge that we humans are just like all animals (we are born, we eat, we procreate to pass on our genes and then we die). While animals practice no religion, they have an enriching life here only trying to survive. They don't expect redemption at a later point. We too can do the same and know that we only have one shot and nothing exists beyond this life. If I can speak of myself, I feel more relived knowing there is no hell waiting for me at end of my few days here. Of course there is the disappointment of not going to heaven, but hey, the probability of getting there is also slim even among the practicing believers! Well, I acknowledge that many people are predisposed into religion and just like Karl Max noted..."The struggle against religion is, therefore, indirectly the struggle against that world whose spiritual aroma is religion." He went further to observe "Religious suffering is, at one and the same time, the expression of real suffering and a protest against real suffering. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people.". Lastly, my hope is that about 200 thousand years to come, humans might evolve into more rational beings who will drop the religion tag and face life for what it is! Time is money, so money is time. Money saved is time gained in reverse! Money stores your life’s energy. You expend your energy, get paid money, and store that money for a future purchase made in a currency.

1. I suspect, from the posts here, that few of us have studied religion and that most of us are relying on hearsay
2. There seems to be an assumption of uniform human behavior and enlightenment. Such an assumption is however not justified and the means if achieving it not explicated
3. The use of language is quite ignorant. For example 'hell'. While the reasoning against it appears enlightened, the understanding of it is unfortunately 'childish' and 'non factual' if religious language us to be taken on its terms. It's always easy for an adult to prove a child wrong...
These objections lead me to say that some of us may be arguing from ignorance.

One beauty with Islam, is how it introduced the whole world to the Heliocentric system of Copernicus and the scientific revolution.
Islam, shock on us, appears to have allowed scientific progress in a way few can appreciate now.

There is truth and there are imposers. Discuss what that religion teaches and not what you see the so-called followers do. My points on this.. 1) Your argument that Islam is the true religion because the Arabs defined themselves ' Followers of God' is a fallacy. In every religion, the adherents follow their God in how they see fit. You cannot dismiss a religion based on how Others see it and qualify another based on the adherents view.Nothing special about Islam there. 2) I fail to understand this notion you have that very few Muslims actually understand the religion and that only you and a few others have understood it.. Those Muslims serve Allah the way they understand him. To them , that is as much Islam as you view yours 3) If Islam is manifested in violence in terrorism, then that is the religion. Remember the Holy Quran is not freely available to be read by everyone and therefore the best way the world understands Islam is by what the adherents project Based on the above, Islam is not Beautiful to 98% of its adherents and the rest of the world watching from outside. It is a main source of conflict and Maybe that is how they see Allah It is said , the real truth about any religion is its fruit. I Think Therefore I Am

You cannot divorce religion from the believer. Religion is like a radio station and believing is like tuning in to the right channel.
A non believer is telling the believer "mimi sisikii chochote, hii radio haiongei" and the believer says, you need to tune in, you need to believe, you need to have faith.
If you are a non believer do not feel pressured to declare a belief if you have not heard the call. Be open, listen to various people, listen to Alphdoti, listen to christian pastors, read some Buddhist texts keep playing with the dial, you will catch something.
If you don't catch anything don't despair pengine uko nyuma ya mlima na huko hakuna network. Keep moving and maybe one day you will get to a point where there is a strong signal. Some believe as children, some in their youth, some in their old age, some on their death bed, some never will and that is all OK.

AlphDoti wrote:@Nandwa and @hardwood, if you do your homework, you realize that religions of the world in to two major groups: Anim religion and semitic religion. Among the Anim religion include: Budhism, Hinduism etc. Among the semitic religions Judaism, Christianity and Islam. So while seeking spiritual guidance, you have to start high level and narrow in to the detail. Now we are at a point where one has filtered out Anim, he does not want to worship animals, he does not want to worship images etc etc. Now we are looking at at the Semetic religions.
As far as peace is concern, it depends whom you are consulting. Of course if you are student of the media, then you have the misconception. If you want to know, consult the authentic books of that religion. That way you can have an objective view. Before the Europeans & Arabs brought their religions here, the locals worshipped Enkai/Ngai among others. Would you classify the latter as Animist gods?

Islam, shock on us, appears to have allowed scientific progress in a way few can appreciate now.
Really? It might have introduced it to the Islamic faithfull, but the rest of the world rely on even earlier sources. The writings of ancient Greek Astronomers, such as Hipparchus & Aristarchus, had already put forth the Heliocentric concept earlier than the first century BC, long before Islam came into being. Hipparchus confirmed in his writings that his studies derived from knowledge accumulated over many millennia, and listed as his mentors Babylonian Astronomers of Erech. Copernicus simply reconstructed ancient ideas and even attributed the theory to Aristarchus.
