there is no need to own a machine on AWS if all you are running on it is wordpress! fending off hackers and paying for something you really don't use much of. My advice - start with a free service on some platform and scale as needed. Who says people will actually come? Start small and tune up as needed and maybe with luck and persistence you will need to host your own server on AWS.... ONE DAY!

have you looked at the squarespaces site and videos? so simple to get started and lets you focus on the thing you really want to do - write a blog! not security.. not mysql instances and backups... not CSS e.t.c. just focus on what will get people there - your content. the rest are good problems to have!

AWS is not a good problem to have smile, but true its better to focus on the blogging part and if possible leave out the other technical issues.

a good problem to have is one that makes you have to move your site BECAUSE YOU HAVE TOO MANY PEOPLE VISITING AND YOU CANNOT SCALE THE CURRENT ARCHITECTURE AS PROVIDED BY PLATFORMS SUCH AS SQUARESPACES

The reason this post has meandered into different tangents is because the thread originator has not said what he wants.

1. Does he want to self host?
2. Does he want to hide himself because he'll be making Moses Kuria type statements?
3. Does he want to hide himself from the law?

Those are 3 different things with different solutions. Some of which can never be shared on a public forum like wazua where the "guests" learn about "cyber crime".

None of the above. Just want a blog where adverts will be thrown kiholela holela. But the responses here have helped me much so far.
