Most of the people making 'fakes' in 'kariobangi' are normally former or current factory workers who have gained knowledge from working on the production lines of mainstream factories. Some also offer 'consultation' on how to manufacture certain products to those underground outfits. The products may be of the right quality but manufactured and sold illegally.

They remind me of Chinese organized criminals - very brilliant guys.
Here's the lowdown: You give them a particular product (say Panasonic) music theatre system and ask them to make copies for you. They study it very keenly.
Then they set up an entire company, incorporated with fake identities, and proceed to make say 10 container fulls of such systems (they can call them say Pansonic or Pannasonic or Panasonnic) and then export to a fellow Kenyan mkora who distributes it to retailers all over at lower prices, and riding on the Panasonic brand name to push the product sales. By the time Panasonic realize iko fakes, the Chinese guys were paid off zamani and the fake company even wound up - they'be left looking for ghosts, and wondering kwani the tenjes made themselves.

That is the level of sophistication Kariobangi Light can evolve into if we dont crack down on them.

They seem to be well versed with the 'formula' - the flavouring, acidulants, emulsifiers, antioxidants, preservatives etc etc.

They should be helped to move from the underworld and be facilitated so that they can produce legal and quality products for the market.

Am not sure that is what they would want. You see the profit margins they're making from the manufacture of counterfeit items is out of this world, coupled by free advertising from the original manufacturers to move their items. I bet that was their main goal when setting up their businesses.

I would actually clap if I read news of such happening in Kenya, it would mean we are on our way to industrialisation. At one time it was USA with fakes, then it was Japan, then Korea, then China, now its Vietnam and neighbours.

The regulatory framework hapa kenya is absurd, we literally emulate the standards huko majuu.
I work with some guys huko and their ability to duplicate is amazing, especially considering these are guys who dropped out at class8 - well if you are not carefull they can make substandard stuff for you, but I think its an area that the government can support while looking the other way. smile
