Even after losing a fortune he still believes there's a true psychic out there. Victim playing. Yes. I like this 'meaning' especially: justification to themselves – as a way of dealing with the cognitive dissonance that results from inconsistencies between the way they treat others and what they believe about themselves. I believe that's how cons start. Manipulating the minds and hearts of others can offer temporary relief but it's all but meaningless if yours is estranged and unsubmissive.
