Kenya Airways will maintain flights to and from the West Africa region that has been hit by an Ebola outbreak, as the government prepares to send two doctors on a fact-finding mission to Liberia.

good move... decide if the controls in place work for you or not.. don't do things because others are doing it. utajikuta ukitembea mguu tupu sababu everyone around you anatembea mguu tupu na hawajui kwanini wanatembea mguu tupu.

The problem in Kenya is group think, mass hysteria and emotional decision-making. Good decision by KQ. If you follow this banning call to its logical conclusion, no one will get out of their house for fear of catching drug resistant TB.
All my friends are heathens, take it slow. Wait for them to ask you who you know. Please don't make any sudden moves.

President Kenyatta,"We should not shun our friends in West Africa, Ebola is there but we will conquer. We will defeat it. We do not have to abandon them"

The President has urged the World not to shun the people of West Africa.

@maka... I wrote this somewhere

Quote:

we all know about the facts of the disease - right? the reason this disease spread in a period of 6 months is because people did not know that it was there and/or refused that it existed! when the rest of the world did not care about (prior to dramatisation by CNN and American Media...) - it never escaped these 3 countries - sio? during that time it had killed many many people! but as soon as Patrick Sawyer (who went burying the sister an ebola patient) got on board the plane to US after attending the funeral of the sister who died of it - it became an international issue. He collapsed and the medics that treated him are now in problem (he did not have a poster on his head saying 'EBOLA PATIENT') Now that facts are available on ground... i.e. ground 0 where the disease is happening - people are not casual about it as they were in the beginning... people are bringing forward their sick and everyone is alert - no travelling to the cities e.t.c. now that we have surveillance in place at the airports and fearful air cabin crew, now that we have a state of health emergency in 3 countries and all this media coverage that people know mtu akitapika hivi u ran like hell - saa hii ndio itakuja kenya? i ende kibera?

Imagine what would happen if KQ stops flights to these countries to prevent the spread on moral grounds. By bad luck, a case is reported in Kenya. They would then have to stop all flights out of Kenya to prevent a further spread. Looks like a rock and hard place.

Ebola virus is not endemic in Kenya

fear not

Endemism is the ecological state of a
species being unique to a defined
geographic location, such as an island,
nation, country or other defined zone, or
habitat type; organisms that are indigenous
to a place are not endemic to it if they are
also found elsewhere. The extreme opposite
of endemism is cosmopolitan distribution .
Another term for a species that is endemic,
is precinctive – which applies to species
(and subspecific categories) that are
restricted to a defined geographical area.
Etymology
The word endemic entered the English
language in the 17th century. It comes
from the New Latin word endēmicus, which
is the latinisation of the Greek word
endēmos, meaning "native." Endēmos is
formed of the words en ,
punda amecheka

Why Ebola won't become a pandemic

The truth of the matter is fear will probably kill more people before Ebola gets even close to them as seen in Naija

I see what the fear of Ebola does when Ebola gets into a country... tighten your borders, get informed, inform your public and don't do idiotic things like banning flights or banning nationalities of other countries.

Read this somewhere else
Quote:
My family arrived at JKIA at 4am today from Liberia via Cairo. We asked an airline official on duty where Ebola screening was being done, he had no idea. We went to the medical office at the arrivals lounge and it was closed. We went to the Customer Service desk and asked the lady manning it about the issue. She casually told us none of the screening officials was around and that we should proceed to the regular immigration desk. The immigration officials noted that we were coming from Liberia but did not mention Ebola. We left the airport without being screened.

what was that again... get with the program

Your insight is very educating. Now what are solutions? Bear in mind that everybody is trying to find a solution to minimize any spread. KQ might be saying if we suspend, then at least we reduce risk to 5% resulting from those who will find alternative routes, but at least they will have saved the 95% direct potential risk. Besides, they will also avoid the risk of being blamed in case anything happens. They would rather loose some business and save corporate image.

So what would be the solution from you to make sure the risk is reduced to about same 5% or lower.

I offered a solution, which as usual the critics won't see any sense because of the preconditioning. My solution:
- stop KQ operations to risk destinations
- launch TV, radio billboard campaigns advising people to avoid any contact to minimum family members
- wash your hands more frequently (Muslims do this already)
- don't do mapango wa kando (Muslims already try in this area, Pliz no debate here. We've debated this many times)
- no kissing and hugging strangers (Muslims too try here)
- no shaking hands (Muslims have already reduced 50% of this contact across sexes)

NOTE: My 5% choice is just for argument sake.

I pity the likes of @swenani and their fishmongering activities. Even the the wife he claims to uplift by fishing all over is at risk because of his habits Shame on you Pray

Kenya Airways West Africa operations update
As we have indicated before, we are dependent on expert advice for our continued operations from Ministry of Health and WHO. Following the Ministry of Health statement issued today; Kenya Airways wishes to confirm that we will comply with the advice to suspend our commercial flight operations to Liberia and Sierra Leone temporarily.

This operational decision effective; Tuesday 19th August 2014 midnight, is based on the situation risk assessment by Kenya’s Ministry of Health.

To our esteemed guests who are booked on the suspended flights, we wish to express our sincere regrets for disrupting your travel plans. We further wish to confirm that we shall be providing for a full refund of all tickets earlier booked and paid for prior to this suspension.

The provision of air transport services during such critical moments remains a crucial component of the outbreak containment and overall management. At the height of the Ebola outbreak, Kenya Airways has remained a key air transport solutions provider. We have transported medical staff, supplies and equipment to facilitate the management of the outbreak.

I take this opportunity to thank our customers for their continued confidence in our services, and our staff for their passion and dedication.
I wish to confirm that Kenya Airways will continue operating all its scheduled flights to Nigeria and Ghana. However, in the interest of public safety for both our esteemed guests and staff, we reserve the right to cancel our flights to any other destination should the situation warrant.

Periodic media updates will be duly provided.

the example you have given in posyt #33 hardly adds weight to your argument in favor of maintaining direct linkage. If anything logically it is on the side of avoiding direct linkage. And it chips away at your assessment. With such poor mechanisms in place In the premier transit facilty dont you now see it is unreasonable to insist on a direct linkage? How and why are you using it to buttress your argument? I am curious to look into your line of thought. I want to study you.

nevertheless I agree with you about the fear introduced into a society by such a threat as ebola.

direct linkage ensures that you know what flights know you need to monitor. based on the assessment/analyisis i had presented b4 on the likely hood that the unsub is liberian, sierra-leonean or even guienean. but the explanation and logic it's now moot as the decision taken now forces us to monitor all flights from wherever since Kenyans coming home will come home and we will not know whether they were from affected countries. welcome to the fools paradise. ps. you are still picking folks from Accra.... you had better wish Accra does screening for airside transist travellers or else....

If I get you correctly you opine that if there is direct linkage then all travellers would confine themselves to that direct route and that none would opt for a connecting route.

You seem to have a lot of faith, for a scientist, and hope that it would be so. Be that as it may what measures do you have in place to 'effectively' monitor this direct route? Recall your example.

Yes let travellers go through Accra or Cairo it wont kill them will it? They are merely more checkpoints if you will to nab the virus. I do hope Accra screens them.
