More on resolutions .....especially of the 'I will quit doing xxx this year' variety, where xxx is a vice or bad habit. Making the declaration is not enough. When you chuck out something from your life, it is necessary to replace it with something else, hopefully better smile. Nature abhors a vacuum.
So, it is very difficult to suddenly stop lighting up or drinking and imagine the body and the mind will easily let you go. The craving gets so intense you fall right back in. Gotta fill it up with activities to take your mind off it,..exercise, hiking, camping, bike riding, join a choir etc etc

@quicksand,
Very well said.
Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.

Life is like playing a violin solo in public and learning the instrument as one goes on.

I used to make new year resolutions as an adolescent and teenager. I'd spend the new year's eve writing down what I wanted to do or change after looking at how the year had gone. Sometimes I'd chastice myself for breaking down on my resolutions after a few months. Sometimes I despaired because I didn't know what or how I would stop my bad habits by replacing them with better ones as @quicksand has pointed out - a lesson that I learned from Spinoza.

But now many years later I realize that gradually my resolutions came to life. Like then, I can only say, 'do not say the struggle availeth not'. As long as you focus and work towards your objective you will win. 'Victory belongs to the persevering'.
