pole for your tribulations...but looking at it from another angle why did the government just make the decision to ban night travel without proper arrangements like informing people early though that they will ban night travel only to implement it when many people had booked night busses to their upcontry homes for the festive season? knee jerk reaction?

Already discussed this Kenyan behavior of coming up with laws and decrees that sound very nice on TV but stupid when reality bites.

There is no empirical evidence that shows that traveling at night causes accidents more than having roads with potholes and compromised gov't officials.

There are accidents during the day too. Why not just ban travelling by public transport day or night and force everyone to use aeroplanes since they are safer.

I don't feel much for coast bus. After seeing their online shenanigans that is one bus I will never go with.

but at the same time, you have to wonder about a ministry that just decides that it is banning another mode of transport.....wait for it....Not banning ALL night transport

But licensing you to travel at night. Heck lets add another layer of taxation, that should save another life.

So a transport company has to have road license, certificates of good conduct, TLB, insurance, join a sacco, bribe police, bribe toll stations, then add another license for the night.

By adding another law and another license and another tax, we are surely surely finishing the idea of accidents in Kenya.

Soon and very soon, we shall have a license for seat belts.....wait for it.....they must be installed by a chinese company.

I also tend to think that it's the Government to blame as opposed to the Bus Companies, who also find themselves in an equally tricky position just like the passengers.

Our transport sector is run like a roadside bar.

One day someone wakes up and decides to ban night transport during peak travel time in Kenya. Just like that. Consequences:

1) Police have an extra opportunity to make money from bribes.

3) Fares go up.

2) Passengers are inconvenienced and their safety is compromised by having to spend nights at weird locations.

3) Transport companies now have an extra layer of bureaucracy and taxation to contend with.

4) Accidents continue happening during the day..

I pity anyone who has invested their money in public transport. Dealing with the Ministry of transport and its policies can drive one crazy.

With proper speed limit control(S), night long distance travel is far much better, stress free and safer than day time travel. Forcing all buses to travel at day time is to add chaos to the traffic management in our roads

More than 400 drivers have been arrested in a police operation targeting buses that have ignored a ban on night travel.

Police said 66 were arrested on Saturday night, 98 on Friday and 84 on Thursday. Traffic commandant Samuel Kimaru said they were all bonded and are expected in court today.

Kimaru said no driver has so far been issued with a licence to travel at night and reiterated the ban is still in force. He added they plan to involve all police officers in the operation in a bid to curb road carnage.

“We have not had a single accident since the ban came into effect and we intend to continue with the operation. No driver has been allowed to travel at night with passengers,” he said.

I pity the bus owners whose incomes have reduced by 50% even when they have loans to service. Imagine a bus that was doing mbs to nbi during the day and a night trip back to mbs? This is very unfair. They may have to double the fare to remain profitable.

HOLY MOLY!!!! I had thought the ban was for all vehicles, kumbe kuna mambo ya licenses. Creation of cartels starts with this types of laws, protectionalism.

This govt is a total joke. A while back, these people used to do their business, then jioni board a bus to NBI, buy stuff during day n travel back that same night. On arrival biashara pap. Sasa kimeumana. Day1 travel, arrive jioni, look for some cash for lodging, next day shop, jioni another lodging expenditure, 3rd day travel back, arrive jioni n go to bed.

From one daytime to 3 daytimes. Isorait. Uhuru has lost it completely.

I support it 100% Money can never be compared to life. Those 'urgent' businessmen can always use the train or take a flight.
