Solomon knew how to choose what is right because God gave him the ability to do so. But Solomon deliberately chose not choose rightly. Or, went against wisdom.
Therefore Solomon had no wisdom to start with, or there's something better than wisdom that other gods could provide. And therefore the gods were better than Yahweh.
What is wisdom to you?
(un)fortunately to follow God one has to release his will. Other 'gods' offer man an avenue to exalt his own will resulting in gross and carnal desires as in Solomons case
God gives the gift but doesn't take away free choice...hence even Jesus the man was heavily tempted
If Jesus the man overcame, then man can overcome, and be powerful, and rule with God.
When we consider Christ's answers during the temptation, we see a will and choice. Strength. 'Whoever loses his self shall gain it', is an invitation to a banquet of co-rulers, the free who have found perfect love.
