Be advised that it is illegal to retail/hawk unprocessed milk. Refer to Kenya Dairy Board industry regulations.

Word of advice, a lot of people fall into the trap of opening side hustles that end up failing. I note that you may not be available to run either of the businesses on a day to day basis. From experience its better to always be present especially during the initial setting up. No one here can really be able to tell you which business to go into without more details.
From my own observations, research and experience, estate businesses are the most risky. Take a look at the area you want to open the business and you may find businesses opening up and closing down after around 6months to one year. If I were you I would first hold onto the money and do a thorough research on what options are there without limiting the focus on those two options. Look at areas where you can invest where you're not physically required to be present eg stocks, bonds. Service delivery on your area of expertise such accounting, IT consulting etc is also another way to have a side hustle.
If you do decide to go ahead make sure you factor in rent for about 6 months, employee salaries for about the same period and also do not use the proceeds from the business until you reclaim your initial investment. All the best!

Dear Wazuans

Thanks so much indeed for the quality and very informative contributions in this forum

l would like wazuans to help me with information about a chips business and a Milk dairy business.

l have like 200k for startup of this businesses keeping in mind this is not my line of expertise.

What are the pros and con of both startups. would 200k be enough depending for

Dairy Business
1. Milk is to be ferried from Mt Kenya where prices are favorable

2. will have to incur cost of transport for the milk to Nairobi

Chips Biz

1. is 200k enough for equipments and licences?

Note that a qood Quality (and I said good quality) Fryer will cost more than 200k. Certainly, a Chinese made Caterina will cost far much less but is useless if you end up having traffic..
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God..

200k is a lot of cash for a fryer, I see budding entrepreneurs frying chips by the road side with only a jiko and sufuria - and some of them have pretty decent traffic, guess you start with what you can afford

That is why I started by repeating "Good Quality". Not sure whether you are talking from experience, or what you see on the streets.I am talking from experience..

Just to deviate abit, someone remind #KDB that Caesars Wife Must Be Above Reproach.
we all know who controls the diary industry in kenya. but again,
am glad to note the announced increment of Ksh5 per Kg of milk delivered to the processors by farmers.

My sister in love is in this business and is doing well. she's complimented it with cakes and chapatis (she makes fantastic chapatis!). She also learnt how to make yoghurt and makes Maziwa mala too. when i spoke to her like a week ago, she had started making ugali (from demand). Capital she started with Kshs30,000 loan from yours truly. So, well, it all started with milk and she quit her teaching job so i bet it can work.
