20+ yrs of operation is irrelevant. Some firms eg Microsoft became solidly profitable "Blue Chips" before they were 20 years old. Another is Google which will turn 20 in 2016 but has been considered a Blue Chip for many years.

Berkshire Hathaway pays no dividends. It is a Blue Chip. It owns significant stakes in Blue Chips too.

BAT is definitely a Blue Chip in Kenya.
EABL has done well over the decades but it has had challenges since it sold 20% of TBL & bought 20% of KBL.

Its earnings are volatile but I am very happy with the management over the past 3 years. It is a core holding of mine so I may be biased. It may not fit @guru's definition. Its shareholders need a stomach of steel as the earnings bob up & down in line with production, tea prices and exchange rates. Currently, all three seem to be in Williamson's favor.

Blue chip companies are:

- usually large companies,
- have existed long enough and hence time-tested, at least 5yrs,
- operate in easily understandable areas,
- Are not BADLY affected during periods of economic downturns,
- They are industry leaders,
- They make money for the shareholders.

So, from the above, i would say;

- Safaricom Limited,
- East African Breweries Limited,
- Kenya Commercial Bank Group,
- Equity Bank,
- Bamburi Cement Company,
- Kenya Power Company (KPLC),
- Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KENGEN)
