@D32, thanks alot for the detailed answer. (though i understood very little!)

Just curious, what worthwhile English channels can you access in Kenya.

Which is the best FTA decoder available locally?

Also, can you set up the scenario you described at a friendly fee?

Bloody DStv down again. Just when me and my daughter were settling down for some serious Father & Daughter cartoon time. She is not amused one bit. And she somehow believes there is something I can do to sort out the mess if I wanted! Nini hii???

@Scar
It's always a pleasure.
Regarding your question, no, I do not deal with this.

@mungaits
Just curious, what worthwhile English channels can you access in Kenya.

Some are in KU, while some are in C band, all of them have variety programming. This is not a complete list.

While I may not know what is available locally, I can mention what is perhaps the best in the world, it is known as the "DreamBox". It is linux powered, it's got awards and has 3'd party add-ons.

Some of the add-ons are apps that probably literary puts the decoder and tv in the owners portable device. With the apps, you can control the decoder, get program information, program schedule, record shows, watch live streamed or recorded shows from anywhere in the world where you have internet access on your mobile device. Or if at home, you can stream through your lan, to a wi-fi hotspot, to your wifi-enabled mobile device, and just move anywhere around the home without missing anything.

iPad, Phone and iPod Touch App: http://www.dmliveapp.de/blog/about/
Android: https://play.google.com/...et.reichholf.dreamdroid - Note that there is an android trojan virus that has the same name as this app, do not worry, all the apps that were infected whith this trojan were removed from the app market.

To get a dreambox, you many need to purchase it from an international retailer who is able to ship internationally. If the retailer cannot deal with international orders, then you will need to use a parcel forwarding service.

Sorry, I do not setup such, but you can try find a local qualified installer.

In addition to what was posted, just feel like I need to emphasize that not all FTA channels are on the KU band hence:

Quoting

"To access an FTA channel, that signal needs to reach your dish, since you are on KU, then a KU FTA needs to fall on your dish."

This means that, if a satellite with FTA channels on C band has a footprint that covers your area, while your dish is a KU, you will not be able to watch the C band FTA channels, unless you also have a C band dish.

While there are decoders that can specialize for each band, most decoders can handle both.

Another popular and affordable way of handling multiple satellite reception is by using motorized kits with dishes. This provides the mechanism to allow the dish to be easily re-positioned, either manually, partially or fully automatic. All that you will need will be two dishes, one for KU, and the other for C band.

I called Multichoice offices for over a week and they don,t pick their calls.They instead direct you to auto receivers.I spent over 500/= on airtime and had to finally go to their offices.
My prayer is we get an alternative service provider.Wish we get one soon otherwise i see DSTV i feel really mad.

@Through which media/newspaper? d'oh! d'oh! d'oh! Really interested on this.

Recently I moved house and had to re-install the dstv all over again. After about one hour of patiently looking for the signal manually I got a strength of 70%. Saved me about 1500 bobsmile . DIY can save a great deal.

I use FTA decoder with a previous satellite bought from Multichoice, i get over 500channels but 30 only are watchable since its an arab satellite, so the 30 channels are in english and they are better than DSTV and best of all FREE FOR LIFE!

They are doing it on air. Saw the advert on one of the Channels in the morning.
