Jinga idea which is likely to fall flat on it's face.To refill 1KG you will require 300 bob.Put any other way,it's 3900 to a 13Kg cylinder.I get the same 13Kg at sub 3K.....Well.....50 bob will give you 167 grams of gas.....What would you cook with 167 grams of gas?NKT!

I always use my 6kg for 2-3months, so if i use it for 2 months it means i consume daily 100g. so you know what one can do with 167g!!!!smile

...The day you will have a family utainua mikono!!! You can party for now because I think you only washa your gas to make 'strungi'.

Liar We cook every meal we need including the so called 'strungi'. ges u have a big family tell us how many kgs u consume in a day, Figures Required.

Good idea especially for the lower income segment of the market. Kerosene demand will probably fall. But the kadogo economy products are often expensive.

This is a good idea but will take alot of resources to implement-and most individuals will not afford as all these additional costs will be passed downwards

Those who are backing it just coz it's a kadogo economy are missing a thing or two. What is the cost of the filling infrastructure? Is it viable to have them in every target settlement? Let's say we have such filling unit in mathare, how about those living in korogocho, kiambiu etc? Are they going to put them up in every informal settlement to reach their target market? Will they board a mat, to n fro, to fetch a 100bob gas,if the refilling point is a distance? Another thing, if one can afford to buy the cylinder, chances are they can afford to refill the whole cylinder. If one can only buy 200 or 100 bob worth of gas, chances are, they won't bother buying the cylinder in the first place. And to those who are saying people are rich, cut the bigotry. People are criticizing an idea, which has nothing to do with the depth of their pockets. As i said,it could fly,but i say it's a sheep to me.

I was talking to someone who has a 13kg gas cylinder she is unable to buy it at ksh 3500 so she has opted to buy kerosene @ 100 daily she argues its more manageable but she has to deal with the pungent smell that can rival a teargas canister when she has done cooking.

Cooking gas dispenser to allow refill for 50/=

Premier Gas, a cooking gas dealer, says the new product will shield the users from health and environmental hazards associated with charcoal use.

The firm has developed a mobile calibrated LPG pump that allows for partial refills from a minimum of Sh50.

The gas will be sold through one kilogramme cylinders in the market with a refill costing Sh300.

Data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics shows the country consumed 61,400 tonnes of cooking gas last year, translating into a per capita consumption of 1.59kg. This is below Africa’s average of three kilogrammes per person.

“Refilling will make it easy for consumers to purchase and use LPG. We aim to pull biomass and kerosene users to start using LPG,” said Michael Momanyi, the general manager of Premier Gas at the launch in Nairobi yesterday.

The empty one kilogramme cylinder will retail at Sh2,000. Currently, the smallest gas cylinder in the market has a capacity of 3kg.

My take is the idea is brilliant and can work. They may need to target the normal users of gas( middle class) and voila!!!!!, they are in business. They just need to be able to refill any mtungi for any amount i have in my pocket and we are all game!!!!

jus hope someone is not eyeing to make cash out of the full mtungis..the prices might rocket up based on cost/kg of the smaller quantities. the idea is gud to accomodate low income segment, but deep down the intention maybe evil..this is Kenya, we know 'these' people dont just do stuff to help people.

The lower income bracket does not just consist of slum dwellers. It has many more people(maybe some of us too). Residential areas like Huruma, Zimmermann, Kawangware, Kangemi would provide a market for the gas.

Why would a family man earning 25k not consider buying the gas instead of the cumbersome and slow kerosene stove? The one-off cost will deter a few but if people from across the economic divide have been able to buy mobile phones, then this could easily be the answer to better energy for that sector.

These guys are going to mint money. The market in Kenya is converging towards Convenience and Flexibility. Ask Safaricom. Even "rich' guys occasionally buy a Bamba 50, not because they can't afford a higher denomination but because sometimes you just dont have the money with you. Same thinking for the Pima Gas. If you dont have the 3,800 to refill the 13kg cylinder chances are you can get some 300 bob or so to buy the Pima gas which will push you for a couple of cookings as you make plans to refill the main mtungi.

I dont like their idea it doesnt make sense, its time and energy wasting ukishinda kununua gas ya 50 bob daily...na sijalala njaa kwa sababu ya gas!
