By african standards, kenya ranks top ten in GDP,and gets an average plus in governance. Guys saying kenya is a failed state shuld make a visit to congo, darfur or somalia. What will u call these? Has any govt employee missed his salary? That could b the beginning of ril shiet! N btw, most of the murk we r in rait now results fm water problems. How many trees hav u planted? If none, then just knw u shat on yoself!

The only reason why some people are still alive is coz its illegal to shoot them!!

I would be very reluctant to call Kenya a failed state. Firstly because I have no clue what parameters are used to arrive at that deduction.Secondly,I would be condemning myself. How?Am I one to see mess in my yard and all I'm busy doing is talking about it while apportioning blame...Finally,like a few have pointedly stated, surely we must be ahead of many in this part of our region. We compare better relative to most..

'A failed state is one which the western countries can't exploit'

In Saudi Arabia,a 9 year old girl is married to a 60 year old man but because they supply the US with credit,Oil and a market for their decomisioned arms,Obama visits them and bows to the king.

I've noticed the youth in particular coming in to a workplace with a completely outsized notion of their own value and importance... just a thinly-veiled arrogance. May be the credit crunch induced recession is whats needed to remind us all about the value of hard work.... By Anonymous

I wonder why Kenyans, should compare Kenya with Somalia and other African Countries.

In 1963 Kenya was the same level with singapore and South Korea. It was better that that Taiwan and even Thailand.

How comes now its where it is.Simply it is a failed state in its own aspect.

But let this not worry you as everyone Cares about himself and how much richer he is than his fellow Kenyan.Even the leaders you see talking about Kenya.

kenya is not a failed state.

kenya is not doing as good as it was possible. Yes we have wasted many opportunities. both collectively and individually,
the system we are in has provided suitable conditions for us to degrade to this level.
to me its a result of premature democracy.
our adoption of democracy came with lots of side effects. notably corruption, irresponsible governance, nepotism. right from the Kenyatta days.
with time our democracy will mature and things will get better. there will be lessons to be learnt. some of them bitter. like PEV.
play your part in your own little way,I'll play my part.

For a formal failed state classification, you are looking at the level of monopoly over the (legitimate) use of violence.. I think thats the formal definition,or something like it. Thats why the Somalia's are classified as failed; not because of (poor) Govt service delivery. And,thats also why Ug is less of a failed state than Kenya (gosh,it even expends its monopoly into Kenya!!)

I would happily pay a performance fee to a group or country (say Singapore) that would run Kenya for 5 years. Set targets & pay for performance. Neo-colonialism? Well,I would rather be safe,well-fed than to remain under the rule of idiots & hyenas.

How easily we forget,or is it just convenient to say it now? Last year some shouting loudest now defined us as a failed state, where our institutions could not handle the results of the last general elections and called to be rescued by foreigners. We are still going on to define ourselves as a failed state when the prime minister does not waste a moment to say how useless our police are. Why are we surprised if the rest of the world comes to believe some of the porojos we allow our politicians to harp on all the time? Kenya,it would appear,is a country with low self-esteem!

Our problems are many, our challenges daunting but we should not let people assail our spirit of resilience and innovation to tackle our problems. Kudos to those who trudge on to keep Kenya firm and proud in spite of the doomsayers who would rather Kenya was a basket case waiting to be rescued by them.

Kenya may not be a failed state as yet.........But surely kenya has a totally failed leadership.

Its only in kenya where G.K limos are legitimately purchased and since the beneficiaries of the vehicles didnt get 10% kickbacks from the purchase ......what happens? They reject the vehicles, sack poor employees........ And what do we do?....We all cheer the hypocritical gestures. This is kenya for u.
