I am usually inspired by reading Wazuan comments on most topics but I am disappointed on this one. Lecturers deserve to be paid better than they are at the moment. That way the job will attract (or retain) a better breed of intellectuals than we currently have. Working in three or more jobs is a survival mechanism for the Lecturers, they would settle if they were paid properly in one job. It is rather counter productive to deny an employee proper pay because he makes some more on the side.

I agree the academia in Kenya does not publish as much as they should, i dont think that has to do with laziness either. It boils down to funding for their research and the appraisal system in the universities. I wish the promotion would be pegged on the published record and impact factor of your work rather than the experience. It is self defeating for universities to make so much money from Module II and pass some of the money to their staff.

In the past lecturers were people that excelled in undergrad who went on to study postgrad but now every module II graduate is registed for masters or PhD of some sort. It is time we establish centres of excellence for gifted and very able students away from the module II model of education for the masses. That is the only way we can have capable people doing research that will make a difference.

Education needs to be revamped in this country right from nursery to the very top, before we do that vision 2030 is another pipe dream not worth the paper its printed on
our goals are best achieved indirectly

@jaggernaut,also please post the same for docs,IT specialists, accountants etc.The days of people being paid alot because they are "supposed" to is over. You have to give VALUE.

I had a prof who was so old he would forget what he was saying midway his sentences. Some would give 1998 computer science notes in 2006!Surely!Exam papers were not marked at times yet our class was of 35 people.Another one would come and mention the chapter we should read that week and disappear.Where is vision 2030 there? And this are the guys you want to pay 610K per month!

The truth is,sometimes you learn a lot more from your boss, workmates etc. These people earn more because they provide VALUE.Not because they KNOW a lot or studied for 12yrs.There are accountants/IT people earning 30K while others earn 300K.The same should apply for everyone.Give VALUE & you can ask for whatever amount you want.
Formally employed people often live their employers' dream & forget about their own.

It's common knowledge that research is really expensive, and everyone who's been through university knows how much the institution invests in research. How then do you expect these profs to carry out their research? I bet most of the guys shouting how lecturers do not deserve salary increment eti because they're lazy and such, has never gone through university!
All you can do is all you can do; but all you can do is enough!

But we can !

Is this true? That our PM and President earn more than their British and US Counter parts and more than most Presidents in the developed world?

Our MPs are among the highest paid in the world..

was this based on VALUE? I find it ironical that politicians can make arguments on the basis of patriotism to convince public servants to keep quiet. Patriotism starts with PAYING TAXES....not cushioning yourself by voting for hefty salaries and allowances, being wishy washy on tax obligations and then asking everyone else to stay put as a show of patriotism.

Making arguments on the basis of value doesnt sort out the problem of remuneration. You cannot argue that people should get low wages because they "read old notes" and what have you. Question is, if we sacked the current crop...are we able to attract "performers" from out there given our current remuneration?

and who said i support the prezzy pm and mps being paid that sum of money? the only reason they are paid that kind of money is because they set their own salaries. the renumeration commission is being established, i hope i be part of it

And then think of the irony of going to ask for Aid from a developed country whose President earns less than you do....
