I dont think kumwaga nje was the sin here. Onan was told to bring forth an offspring for his brother by sleeping with the wife. His disobedience was the sin; in that he knew the offspring wouldnt be his. So alimwaga nje to avoid providing an offspring for his brother.
Masturbation itself is not a sin, IMHO. Whenever you want to have your sperm count checked, you'll be asked to masturbate. That's for medical procedures.
What makes masturbation appear like a sin is because I guess it's hard to masturbate without having all the sexual images on your mind. That lust of the flesh. You'll think of this beautiful woman you want to sleep with, you'll undress her, etc. You'll get a copy of a blue movie, or connect to porn sites, get xxx magazines, etc. That makes it bad.
