Had the same problem. Get your kids to download something called Juice Defender from the market. It conserves batteries and data consumption. The way it works is that it kicks the IDEOS to life only when you unlock the screen, it otherwise sleeps the rest of the time. But at preset intervals, it activates and checks for mail etc. Great stuff.
