I thought GOtv & StarTimes were obeying a court order?

They obeyed a court order that supposedly violated a contractual obligation they had with their clients.

So which is supreme? The court order or contract with customers? If its the court order what can they do?

These stations should not be concerned with decoders any company can provide eg Access Kenya Safcom Airtel etc. Technology changes with time and these decoders will have to be changed too. What the likes of Nations Standard etc should be working on is creating content. Just like the way we have BBC news, BBC travel, BBC documentaries, BBC Nature, BBC Drama etc. The production department should be gearing up to create worthy content not just broadcasting. Interesting times ahead.

Ndemo sums it up

If you are in the media industry and more so a producer, editor fundi wa mitambo orator (Ps not newscaster). Sharpen your skills. Remember that Jungu that landed on some womans shamba? That could be you some day to come. Explore dream discover. The media industry is going to change drastically and remember in this world Change is the only constant. No one can stop an idea who's time has come. If radio digitized (Mw to Fm) then Tv will and those who wont move with the cheese will be thrown out of the water.

For how long will we remain analogue. We are in 2014 not the 1970s. Our digital TVs are rusting away for lack of digital signals. The broadcasters should move into the 21st century.

Did I just hear CJ Mutunga quote Ken Wamaria during the supreme court ruling and say that "these are my things, these are your things, these are the fundamentals"?

Tide turns this time against CAK. CJ Mtunga - CAK erred in failing to balance interests of local investors.

Appeal Court ruling set aside, but NMG, RMS and SG could still get license as CAK ordered to start process for a third license in 90 days.

I think this was a well thought out ruling taking in the interests of local investors and raia who had already bought the Startimes decoders etc. A third licence was the best way out of the stalemate.

true @Thimioni. While at it, I wonder, is it possible for CAK to require that the three (or four) operator's boxes be inter-operable? I have a feeling these big three (NMG, RMS, SG) are pushing so hard for a license with the intention of launching their own STB. At this rate, we will end up with one stb each for STV, SigNet, GoTv, Bomba tv (has been doing test transmissions on channel 57 at 762 MHz, fronted by Radio Africa group) and perhaps the other fronted by these three, if they choose that route that is. Is it possible to require them to have some sort of a unified platform so that one would require one box to watch either of them so long as one has a valid subscription?

Very silly...The court abdicated its duty...How does the court tell the parties to sit down and talk???That failed and its the very reason they are in court...A populist ruling throws the media sector into further confusion...CAK will invite further bids as directed then throw out the local media...its not the court's business who should be awarded the license..
