As much as I wanted to, I didn't think 12 years was an award worthy movie. I am yet to find anyone who shares the same thought so I am assuming people like this movie only because it told "our" story. How do you decide what's a good movie or what's not? Do you look at the acting, cinematography, editing, music etc. or only the story? Lupita and Ejiofor did a good enough job but something was missing for me.

Above average for me. Nothing special, other than the fact that Lupita alikamatwa na mzungu, the whipping she got till her dress dropped. .....they even displayed her butt....

Happy for Lupita. Its definitely a great start n there is a whole future for her ahead. But the movie itself is nothing great to write home about. Whipping, whipping n more whipping...very many lengthy silent scenes...too predictable. Not really a 'nice' movie IMO.

that was my issue when i read the title of the movie - what role would she be playing? All the same I will be watching it soon.

And be warned in advance...its 12 years looong. Maybe I found it too long coz it was a bit boring but it looked to me too long to watch.

Sadly, I share your sentiments. The director could have done a better job, telling the story.

Superb acting, but I'm left wondering why all the hullabaloo given how small her role was. Nevertheless, let our girl shinesmile

Enyewe her appearance was quite a limited one. Short, yet it generated a cloud of dust. .....Sikuelewa but I'm definitely happy for her.

Usiogope daddy!! Jivunie kuwa Muwazua. Think what you like and express your opinion with courage. Stand your ground and have your say. Some will agree with you some will disagree but traitor, no!! you are no traitor for having a contrary opinion and don't ever apologize for thinking for yourself.

Movies for actors are about positioning and building a brand. I think Lupita is making all the right moves. She has been busy going to all the TV shows she can creating a buzz at the Golden Globe and the Oscars to come. Whether she wins anything or not by the time this is all over everybody who is anybody in Hollywood will know who she is and that is how you get work. She has got an opportunity to put herself out there and she is doing a great job. The bigger your name the more work you get and the bigger the paycheck you can command. Acting in movies is not like any other kazi ya ofisi where you show up everyday. Here you might get a good movie if you are lucky once a year or once every two years but you must continue to live the celebrity lifestyle everyday..... ni kazi ngumu sana.

I agree with you. I think if they needed to reward a black movie then The Butler had a much better production, better storyline and cast. That said, I think Lupita did a fantastic, amazing job on here role - or maybe I was just looking out for her. This was her first major role and she's on her way to accomplishing great things.

BBI will solve it

A number of you share my thoughts but I am yet to find an AA who does. Don't get me wrong though, I've been keeping up with her appearances on the late night shows and also loving her style. Can't wait to see her in another movie.

Superb explanation...But no matter how well you explain it is difficult for many to understand because their opinions are fixated on something... Did a I hear a musician from Central on Churchill Show say that he used a photo he took with Raila to get a visa to play in the US? Did I hear that?

Slave movies are always difficult to watch...I read the story of Solomon Northup and it is heart breaking. Such movies make me hate caucasians with a passion ( remember Amistad?).

Anyway, that's besides the point. Just appearing in a Golden Globe nominated movie is a big thing but to be nominated even for a minor support role (haven't watched The Butler to know the extent of Oprah's support role) is BIG...the icing on the cake would be an Oscar nomination. Win or lose, history is made. I wish her all the best...superior productions like Suga and the right networks will elevate you to such positions. This will be a massive stepping stone
