What a headline?!?

Portuguese head to former colonies to escape Euro crisis - http://www.independent.c...uro-crisis-8306048.html

Quote:

When Marcio Charata lost his well-paying job in southern Portugal two years ago, he fired off resumes to all his contacts. Determined to survive the economic woes strangling Europe, he secured 20 interviews — but no job. So he set his sights on a faraway and unlikely market: Mozambique, Portugal's once war-torn former colony.

Today, Charata is a senior executive at a Mozambican media company, joining thousands of his fellow Portuguese who have arrived here in recent months seeking refuge from the euro crisis. "This is an oasis in the desert," Charata, 33, said with a smile.

Faced with mounting unemployment, rising taxes and cuts to social welfare programs, many Portuguese are traveling to former colonies in search of work, to the very places their colonial ancestors were forced to leave more than a half-century ago — countries such as Brazil, Angola and Mozambique, which boast some of the world's fastest-growing economies, fueled by vast deposits of oil, minerals and other raw materials.

Sub-Saharan Africa, to be sure, is no economic promised land. Much of the continent still struggles with high poverty, disease and unemployment, and businesses face major hurdles, including corruption and red tape.

But the Portuguese arrivals are an indication that the continent is on the move economically. The middle class is growing in many African countries, as are large infrastructure projects. Foreign investors are scouring the region for opportunities, while trade with China is expanding. The World Bank predicts that one-third of all African countries' growth rates will top 6 percent this year, with many nations' economies swelling more rapidly than the East Asian tiger economies.

Citadel Capital made their initial foray into East Africa with one of the largest private equity investments in the region for years. They committed to invest US$287 million, kicking off with a US$164 million 5-year capital expenditure programme. After teething problems, the Rift Valley Railways has made its first significant footprint on the transport sector with the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service.

So far, so good.

"The familiar sight of passengers dangling dangerously from overloaded trains in Nairobi might soon be history after Kenya Railways launched a modern commuter service.

Coming after the commissioning of the eight-lane Thika superhighway, the service already has some Kenyans dreaming of seeing an underground railway system, known as ‘the tube’ in the United Kingdom and ‘subway’ in America, built within their lifetimes..."

Cracks are beginning to form in the DisUnited States of America, setting up 2013 for what seems to be a annus horribilis (http://www.scribd.com/doc/50630139/The-United-States-Timing-the-Path-to-Unrest).

Great Britain had to give up its colonies post-1931 following the Sovereign Debt Crisis. Britain did not default on its debt but declared a moratorium, effectively ceasing interest payments. In the wake of a real estate crash and bubbling debt crisis, the chains that are holding the United States are breaking apart.

"Residents in more than 30 states have filed secession petitions with the "We the People" program on the White House website.

Petitions to strip citizenship of individuals signing onto petitions to secede and exile them have also been submitted.

A threshold of 25,000 signatures must be met within 30 days for petitions to be reviewed. The Obama administration explains, "If a petition meets the signature threshold, it will be reviewed by the Administration and we will issue a response...."

Spanish police stage protest against austerity measures - www.channelnewsasia.com/...ess/view/1237895/1/.html

These are the same cops that have been rounding up protestors doing what they are now doing!? Who'll arrest the cops?

This is a serious curve ball scenario for the spanish leadership. Things can easily go volatile anytime. Watching this closely for it could snowball into Greece. A euroland spring is in the making...!

The EU has spent the entire Nov bickering about Hellena. The so called Nov 20th meet has come and gone with Greece getting no deal. Most boring entertainment ever by eurocrats. I want a refund for this bogus showdown...

With euroland in recession why would they want an expensive €? How will they boost exports with a strong €. Bizarro markets...

Moving to next smoky show, Gaza flares; oil feels cold & continues to slide instead of rallying hard. Still trying to decode this smoke screen for something is cooking...

Direct yuan accounts in KE - http://www.theeastafrica.../-/lxp265z/-/index.html

This is good news. Forex exchange loss is not amusing esp when one is forced to change from one ccy to another and another to get what you want. E.g. Converting yuans to USD then to KES with volatility & exchange commission.

Yuan diversification - www.presstv.ir/detail/20...t-to-overtake-us-dollar/

This year has seen very many nations get into yuan reserves by diversifying from USD & euros. In the next few years I expect this trend to gain strong momentum due to the dismal euroland returns as they finally clean out their debt wounds to initiate recovery much later in 2020s.

Hi all... i have always said the dollar as a store of value doesnt make sense ...i mean a currency whose economy is in dire debt , where the youth jobs are scarce , where the new regime is going to tax the rich and working class to cater for those who cannot or will not work . I dont understand why the world insists on hoarding away wealth in this currency.
The other thing frustrating me is the devaluation of the shilling , this is going to raise havoc on stock and im hoping the dollar doesnt infalte to the 90 mark coz that spells the whole inflation saga all over again.
The kenyan economy isnt exactly doing fantasically apart from safcom and banks , construction is already on a slow down , businesses are tightening their belts overdrafts are rising & garuanteed unemployment before elections rises.
All this will a rising dollar were screwed
