This is a constant award for The Pride of Africa. What shocked me was that KQ is most admired airline in Africa, ahead of ET et al

Another case of other people making money at the expense of KQ.

The management is to blame. Demand is there and KQ can fill those birds.

Change of LHR schedule for instance was a bad move. The numbers were there in that route to fill a B777. The thinking that the Aircraft was not being utilised fully was just a scapegoat to sell the landing slot for quick cash. Oversized Cargo that could fit in a B777 cannot be uploaded by KQ anymore.

Kenya Airways cannot consistently fill a 400 seat Boeing 777-300ER. They just can't. None of their routes have capacity for the 77W. This is an aircraft that burns a lot of fuel as well so imagine having the plane half full at best and it's not burning fuel as economically as a 787, plus loan & lease repayments. Naikuni and co made a terrible choice bringing this plane. Remember they did operate the 3 77W's for about a year and you saw how much money they burned operating them.

Even TK is only using KQ's 777 for their high capacity India routes + London due to the large economy class configuration in KQ's planes.

If the network is expanded then KQ can fill it. There is demand out there. Turkish has a number of them in service. It is not India and London alone.

KQ lost the market share due to mismanagement, otherwise they should be able to utilize the equipment.

Good management is lacking in KQ. Mikosz failed to diagnose the issues and address them. This is why he is leaving. With such a loss alone from the 3 B777s, he can't see how KQ can make a profit in the near future.

I know TK has more 777's but none of them have the dense economy class config like the one's they've leased from KQ. Those 3 are only used for India, London and Dubai.

Not many airlines can operate 777-300ER's. There is a reason why 787 and A350 are so popular now.

Simply expanding the network doesn't mean a 777 get's automatically filled. Which route would fill up a 77W consistently to/fro Nairobi. Given KQ's problems this isn't a gamble they would even touch.

If priced well, what about LHR?
Then there is AMS which is a hub for Kenyans (& others) headed to the USA/Canada and Europe.
What about China? Cargo (from China) and pax who use ET, EK and QR.

AMS/LHR could perhaps use some more capacity than the 788 offers. I think 330 seats could be filled even at current fares (Which is what KQ's 777-200 used to do)
400 seats is just too big for KQ ops.
Would be better if they had 789/78X/A350 to replace the 777-300.

As for China, KQ can't even compete with ET. They only have 1 route to Guangzhou which goes through BKK. ET flies to maybe 5/6 Chinese cities. It's insane how far behind KQ is wow.

You want a fuel efficient fleet at this point in time. I believe it's why KQ will go for the Max as soon as it's cleared to fly again.

This is one of the reasons Buffett started investing in Airline stocks again.

@nairobby - For KQ, the 777s are a sunk cost. They are screwed either way.

The 777s can carry additional cargo to LHR/AMS. Veggies and flowers.
Can the 777 be converted into a Combi? I have flown in a KLM 747-Combi. Go with 300 pax and increase cargo space.

China - Well, why not fly a larger plane (777) but at a fare that's more reasonable. And partner with China Southern (or others) to Beijing and Shanghai via CAN?
Whether KQ flies via BKK or not, there is demand for cargo from China-Kenya. Also potential for a Combi 777?
CAN-NBO-Lagos/ACC?

Fuel prices are not that crazy at $61/bbl vs $120/bbl at the peak.

That sounds good but the demand isn't there at the moment. If there was that demand we'd be seeing more China frequencies. Maybe that demand can be created, I blame management for this. They already have a partnership with CX anyway.

The 77W would only work if KQ dominated JKIA like Bole. Too much competition over here and sadly KQ's product is inferior to the competition. Either way, good plane just not fit for KQ at the moment.

Combi's are not in use anymore. KLM has only 1 remaining.

Even with low oil prices, you want the more efficient planes.
