KQ has released its Q4 operating numbers and they are not attractive with the display of reduced capacity and reduced load factor. However, KQ finance director Alex Mwangi has said that they will deliver a modest profit in FYR. That means in H2 they managed to reverse the H1 loss of KES 4.8B. Was wondering how they were able to do that > Derivatives¿ Those derivatives must be it. #FYR Expectations

If from derivs then KQ should just convert to a hedgefund! They've played that game for too long... $15/barrel oil... The commodities lehman moment arrives as well as Sovereign debt volcano!

I thought I heard that they want their deposit money back from Boeing (with interest?)for delaying delivery of the 6 Dreamliners ordered? Anyone with any ideas how that could impact their operations?

When did he say this? I read the article but it was vague. If KQ is going to break-even OR make a slight profit for FY 2012-13 ... it is a HUGE plus. Though I have my doubts. It had to re-hire (court order) all the staff it had sacked. That will hurt the 2H results. Greedy when others are fearful. Very fearful when others are greedy - to paraphrase Warren Buffett

But seriously guys if you understand how airlines work, if you receive 6 planes and your core markets are shrinking (Europe, Africa),you are closing routes in your core markets and load factors are dropping, wouldn't you want to return the planes to the manufacturer or lessor! what are you going to do with the 6 planes? Infact the dreamliner delay is a massive boon for KQ. They would have had little to do with them in the current environment. Drive past JKIA in the mid morning and you will see quite a significant number of idle planes parked, suggesting there is trouble in the markets. At the peak or in normal operating environment at midday you hardly see more than 2 planes parked or being prepped for local flights!
One hidden herring, by the time load factors are tumbling, the pricing game has been played to near threadbare margins. Certainly for KQ to defend a lot of their market share they have had to chop prices to compete. This will show up on the topline. I think KQ will upstage KK in depth of the bottom line. It's been an ugly year for airlines! Pity KQ was not prepared for it!

As @Kausha says... KQ might beat KK in the loss column for 2012. The planes cost money. The staff costs money. Unless KQ is flying MORE passengers the planes are 'idle' or the seats are empty. There is a break-even load for flights & when a KQ flight is flying at 65% capacity then it is likely it is a break-even flight at best. Suppose 50% is break-even for variable costs, then 65% might cover fixed costs, For profits, it needs 65% or higher. If KQ drops its fares (lower RPK) to fill seats, it means the % (Passenger Load Factor) required rises even further... The 4Q 2012-13 Operational Update was not encouraging. Greedy when others are fearful. Very fearful when others are greedy - to paraphrase Warren Buffett

@VVS won't say much but for those in the know, KQ BEP load factor varies between 69% - 74% in a normal operating environment (growing markets and traditional fares). There are pockets of destructive fare wars in some African markets, Dubai etc suggesting the BEP load factor is slightly higher. At 66%, me thinks the airline is being forced to frolic with losses by to the environment.
