Metaphysical poetry is a very interesting concept for me. The best example is the poem "The Flea," in which John Donne uses a metaphysical conceit between a simple flea and the complexities of young romance to develop the narrator's argument for a young woman to forfeit her chastity

They Went Home
Maya Angelou

They went home and told their wives,
that never once in all their lives,
had they known a girl like me,
But... They went home.

They said my house was licking clean,
no word I spoke was ever mean,
I had an air of mystery,
But... They went home.

My praises were on all men's lips,
they liked my smile, my wit, my hips,
they'd spend one night, or two or three.
But...

Had never really taken note of the sweet poetry in this song by Elvis Presley
Quote:
As the snow flies
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin'
A poor little baby child is born
In the ghetto (in the ghetto)

And his mama cries
'Cause if there's one thing that she don't need
It's another hungry mouth to feed
In the ghetto (in the ghetto)

People, don't you understand
The child needs a helping hand
Or he'll grow to be an angry young man some day?
Take a look at you and me
Are we too blind to see
Do we simply turn our heads, and look the other way?

Well, the world turns
And a hungry little boy with a runny nose
Plays in the street as the cold wind blows
In the ghetto (in the ghetto)

And his hunger burns
So he starts to roam the streets at night
And he learns how to steal, and he learns how to fight
In the ghetto (in the ghetto)

Then one night in desperation
A young man breaks away
He buys a gun, steals a car
Tries to run, but he don't get far
And his mama cries
As a crowd gathers 'round an angry young man
Face down on the street with a gun in his hand
In the ghetto (in the ghetto)

And as her young man dies
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin'
Another little baby child is born
In the ghetto (in the ghetto)
Laughing out loudly smile Applause d'oh! Sad Drool Liar Shame on you Pray

I Wish you Bad Luck!
Chief Justice John G. Roberts, 2017

From time to time in the years to come,
I hope you will be treated unfairly,
so that you will come to know the value of justice.

I hope that you will suffer betrayal,
because that will teach you the importance of loyalty.

Sorry to say, but I hope you will be lonely from time to time,
so that you don’t take friends for granted.

I wish you bad luck, again from time to time,
so that you will be conscious of the role of chance in life,
and understand that your success is not completely deserved,
and that the failure of others is not completely deserved either.

And when you lose, as you will from time to time,
I hope every now and then your opponent will gloat over your failure;
it is a way for you to understand the importance of sportsmanship.

I hope you’ll be ignored,
so you know the importance of listening to others,
and I hope you will have just enough pain to learn compassion.

Whether I wish these things or not they’re going to happen.
And whether you benefit from them or not will depend upon your ability to see the message in your misfortunes.

Forever Young
Bob Dylan

May God bless you and keep you always
May your wishes all come true
May you always do for others
And let others do for you
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung
And may you stay forever young

May you grow up to be righteous
May you grow up to be true
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you
May you always be courageous
Stand upright and be strong
And may you stay forever young

May your hands always be busy
May your feet always be swift
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift
May your heart always be joyful
May your song always be sung
And may you stay forever young

There is a new budding poet who happens to be a banker and has produced his first poetry work called "No Longer Stunted" a second one in works. He combines the normal kenyan life in his works and its quite satirical. Available in major book stores around nairobi
