Sometimes you hear things that almost bring tears to your eyes.

Safaricom is big ?? Compared to who ? The dinosaurs at Airtel and orange ?

In Africa, safcom is nowhere near the telcos in the big boys club. MTN, Glomobile, Orascom....

I think Kenyans have become so accustomed to mediocrity that a thriving business is seen as abnormal and needs to be brought down.

The report is back....i think they want to cripple Safaricom and have another company take a huge chunk of the market share.
They recommend Mpesa to be a different company by just having different offices and staff. This increases the costs of business. I dont even see the importance of this.

I don't understand. These are two different services but interlinked. The other mobile operators offer the same services but customers choose not to go with them. Even the mobile number migration failed to weaken them. I think this is unfair unless if the reason is security and regulation.

BBI will solve it

Punishing Safaricom for building M-Pesa into a giant is silly. They all started from the same premise/level but one innovated. #ThisIsKenya

How is this likely to affect the share price?

Safaricom chief executive Bob Collymore, who is typically reticent in his public comments, said this: "It sends a really worrying message to international investors in investing in the country ... It would imply that this is no longer a safe place."

This comment was made in response to the leak of a report commissioned by Kenya's telecoms regulator which allegedly recommends breaking Safaricom up into separate telecoms and financial services businesses because the firm is too dominant. Safaricom has 26 million subscribers, and of course its innovative M-Pesa mobile money platform.

"It's a malicious act to leak such a damaging report without first consulting or at least sharing it with us," Collymore told Reuters.
