It is understandable why Nigeria would want to be taken seriously. Kenya’s economy is smaller than that of Lagos.

By the end of this year, Lagos will surpass Cairo as Africa’s largest city. It has nearly 120 million mobile phone subscribers, almost the entire population of East Africa.

A friend who deals in mobile phones tells me he went into a shop in Dubai to buy about 50 phones, when a Nigerian dealer entered.

He was kicked out, and the shop put up a “Closed” sign. The Nigerian had ordered “all” the phones on display and in the shop’s stores.

Indeed everything is everywhere, very disorganized

If a country's GDP reflected it's living standards then Nigeria would indeed be giant but so far it's not.

GDP per capita vs GDP

1.Botswana=10,866 /17.570
2.SA=11,750 /384.315
3.Angola=6,650 /118.719
4.Namibia=5,383.26 /12.51
4.Ghana=3,501 /38.939
5.Nigeria=2,883 /268.708
6.Kenya=1,884 /41.117

Nigeria has the 3rd largest GDP in Africa,after Egypt and SA, but look at it's per capita and see how it lags behind countries with smaller GDP's eg Botswana at only 17b.
It's GDP is stretched by it's huge pop,one can hardly feel it's effect in their standards of living.
Compare our small pop (43m) with Nigerias (177m) and the difference per capita btwn the two (usd 999) uone we are not fairing badly, yet we are 4 times Nigeria's pop.

So if we are talking about them becoming a superpower in the future,then their population has to reduce significantly (dream) for any improvement to be felt.

@essyk, isn't their huge population an advantage because they have a huge market/labour pool locally? Their population is more than that of EAC region. Makes sense to go federal like they did.

Not at all, because they lack purchasing power.
The gap btwn the dangotes and the middle class is so huge,coupled with corruption etc.
Reason they engage in crimes like 419 and other drug related biz beacuse the resources cannot sustain the population or rather the resources benefit just a few.

well in...the biggest problem with Nigeria isnt even the population its actually corruption same as Kenya...China has used their large population to their advantage you need to get everyone to contribute into the kitty even in the smallest way not letting a few do the contribution while the rest become a burden....

Nigeria is just a big Kenya. Same issues only that they were blessed with oil. Where would Kenya be if we were more endowed with natural resources? Save for religious conflict, Nigerian problems-tribalism, graft etc-are very much like our own.

Right but I think we have more natural resources than Nigeria? oil still in the pipeline but at least we can refine unlike them.
Think Tourism,flouspar,soda ash,coal,limestone,tea,coffee,gemstone,etc etc.
Nigeria imports lots of foodstuff unlike we who grow locally.
The difference is in attitude.
The nigerian living in the slum thinks,and behaves like a King- no inferior complex.smile
That is what makes them big.
