Not very bullish on the big banks, I believe sooner or latter they will have to lower their base rates or keep MP's excited for ends on ends! If adjusted for the super normal base rates our banks are actually struggling to grow. It sounds a hollow argument but it would be interesting to see the the financial statements look when the big 5 drop base rates by 300 - 500bps.

My other concern is that our population has very low financial literacy levels on average and very dependent on the seller when making choices. This has a weakness in that with rates at 20%+ many households are really struggling as reflected in purchasing power. Many borrowers have a general feeling of having been taken to the cleaners by the lenders. I posit that the enthusiasm for personal loans will drop off significantly going forward and banks will struggle to lend to consumers the way they have lent in the past. This is a hypothesis and I am still a young student of behavioral finance. However what comes to mind is the period 1993 - 1997. A good number of the generation that were at their prime working age then are very averse to bank credit and would rather pass on opportunity than seek debt finance from a bank.
