I am planning to switch to digital TV but have been unable to find the digital TV converters (set top box) to use with my old telly. Where can I get one and which is the best model?

Depends because they do both wholesale and retail, and prices are negotiable.

@Redi

Instead of just selling, please educate us. For instance any TVs in kenya that are digital ready? Alternatively how do we use the set top boxes? What makes more sense economically buying the set top or a new Digital TV.

You will have assisted many a "peeper" greatly and chances are that they will buy from you.

You will know that you have arrived when money and time are not mutually exclusive "events" in you life!

There're really no digital TV sets in the country.All the fancy LCD sets you see around have analogy tuners thus requiring the set-top box for digital reception.The cost of a true digital TV would be quite high hence it makes sense to get the box.
Please also ensure you only buy an approved model.

@XSK.The set box ia basically a receiver.You need it to decode the digital waves.About 20channel are available once u install one.The 1st phase which was implemented in dec/jan2010 covers a radius of 140km from nairobi.

The Digital Video Broadcasting(DVB-T) technology bn in existence since late 80s.most of the set box targeting the mass market are mature.

Comes in two forms, SD or HD type.A HD receiver cn decode both SD&HD transmissions.Currently all channels are free to air.might take another 10yrs or more to get pay channels.Most of europe,asia and Africa use or will use DVB-T technology.

these gadgets also available for vehicles/computers. see http://www.alibaba.com/member/ke108524083.html

@REDI
Why are you saying that it might take 10 years plus to have pay TV channels, yet there are so many players who have lined up to provide pay TV channels like STAR TIMES MEDIA

Actually they beauty with digital transmission is that once the infrastructure layout is complete for the whole country, TV stations will only be providing content and not transimitting. So content will be the king and thats how players of pay TV channels will come

@tuvok
Try Star3800T set top box i have tried and its quite good

check out this site they are local distributors

@ BENZi.one reason.Our SES.Its low.previous experience eg KBC-2,GTV indicate that market cnnt support it.thts why most of the new stations' program is laden with music and old movies.
@ TUVOK- try our HD receiver at 5500.check my previous post 4 details.

i will also advice you to buy the star3800T,it's the only one so far approved by kenya bureau of standards so you're assured of quality.also its the box which has been supplied by the KBC digital roll out partner so you are guaranteed against any smart card incompatibility issues which may arise.

I got the StarTimes STB but I cant get any sound on some channels, specifically the channels that require the card. The other channels though(20 of them including radio)are good, pretty good picture and sound quality. Anyone who knows how this can be resolved or a number I can call to get this sorted?

@hindi ni riu : The additional channels arenot yet fully operational and the engineersare still working on the Digital platform to have the channels fully functonal. Infact be ready for about 45 pay channels soon! Once the pay channels are fully operational with clear picture and sound, you will have a grace period to sample the channels then the channels wil be locked and will require a smart card and payment to watch. So dont worry now wait untill the channels are all on air then you can start the search for a smat card.That is the only time the cards will be available! Check this web site www.godigitalnow.net
