Bigcheese wrote about this cheap houses here sometimes.I have been doing some research and this seems like a very cheap panacea to our perennial house shortage especially in urban areas.am also informed that a British company is manufacturing containers 12' wide to avoid knocking down of walls........Such an opportunity for engineering firms like steel structure,H-Young etc......any company doing it here?......to those in the know,let us share as much as possible.....while you are at it,you might want to see some aesthetic designs here....Unbelievable!1

I always envy a neighbour of mine whose kid's keja is a container.
I have always been thinking of this. If u want to move you simply load it on a truck and there you are.
To start,what does it cost to have the small one?

The real measure of wealth is how much you'd be worth if you lost all your money.
African parents don't know how to say sorry.. the closest you will get to a sorry is a 'have you eaten'

@ Sober

We bought a 40ft last year for 80K; transport and forklift 15K.

@ Njunge

You have added value and this is what most SK members should focus on instead of bashing each other. Its amazing to see what a container can be transformed into.

This site will go places. Cheers.

@doh,

Was it new?........80K for a 40 footer must have been quite fair.Imagine the possibilities now that the gova is sourcing for 800B for upgrading slums.........enough to make a container city of 5M units complete with all amenities.........

It was a used one. But you know how longlasting those things are. You cant get a new one. They are used over and over for containerizing loads.

@Thatcher,

Pole.I have been on the road...........That's the challenge i was putting across to SK members who are engineers,interior designers and architects......Of course,it is another opportunity for young enterprenuers.......to the best of my knowledge,knocking off walls and re-designing to a customers taste need not be rocket science stuff and yes....... a good fabricator ( A panel beater would also do well ) with basic tools like cutting gas set,angle grinder,single phase/fuel run welding machine,hand drill and a couple more cheap tools........there are many....

You just read my mind njung'e. I have been toying with this idea for a while now. There are pple who can fabricate these hses as is evident with the various container shops and offices around. what i am not sure about is if there are any experts incase you would like to join 2 or more containers. There is also the issue of law that may hinder you from setting up such structures depending on where your land may be.

Other challenges that I envisage would be plumbing,the process of joining 2 containers and interior design. I mean what material do you use for the interior to withstand different weather conditions? would block board do? Any one who is construction savvy to shed some light.

Container hsing would be ideal for someone who has land and does not have construction money.at the moment instead of continuing to pay rent,you could set up a container hse in your land and live there rent free as you build your dream home at your own pace. later when you have built your stone hse the container hse can be used as a guest house or SQ. You could also rent it out if you don't have privacy issues.

I happen to have witnessed one built from scratch...the constraction is simple..It takes a very short time to build thus saving you lots of money for labour costs

Before you start building one though I would recommend you source out different materials for your internal walls,piping,lighting and other luxuries that you would like in your new home...speaking from experience I have discovered that there are many innovative ways that can be used to build a beautiful hse,that will last you a life time.I have lived in the Uk for 10yrs now and will tell you I have seen large houses been built very fast with less wastage.And I believe if this container Idea would solve alot of hasles for pple building houses in kenya( wachana na nini by nine).I am personnally looking into building a few in Kenya soon.

He who dares..wins!!!
