i went to one of gps car tracking companies, this guy explained to me how it works, but their payment charges are one off. 27500/=.no monthly charges nor maintainance fee.
while a friend of mine running a car hire company pays a monthly fee of 2500per month and an installation fee of 32000/=

are this guys genuine?
has anyone dealt with this people?

I (personally) know someone running such a company..

Usually one can opt to purchase the GPS alarm one off and do the GPS tracking manually (send a text to the car to get GPS co-ordinates which can be mapped through something like google maps).

Or pay a subscription so as to use the company's tracking services, where the GPS tracking is done by them.

@jaribu,I havent tried anyone yet. But from trackntrace I realise there are diff types depending on what u r looking for. Was just shopping around and the different modes of operation surprised me. The one-off payment where they just install a gadget isnt very convincing as the initial payment isnt far much higher than where u have to pay a monthly fee for their services. After u pay for this gadget n u encounter problems with it,do u call them for service/maintenance? If so,si wataizimazima ndio urudi,am just not trusting this very enticing formula...(Blame it On TrackIt!)

@tuvok,if u could introduce me to your friend?

@others,any personal experiences ama mmelipia insurance?

@ Beef

Beware of this because they might not tell you now. They have to install the gadget in some hidden place (does that sound familiar?),so that when the gadget has a problem you have to visit their workshop after which you will be bombarded with a surprising invoice + VAT for 'servicing'. Secondly, the gadget sends you the vehicle location in terms of geographical coordinates only. E.g. 39S 15E 0' N. In case of a theft, how do they (or you) expect to interpret where this could be on earth?. All gadgets work like this. The only difference is that some have invested heavily in software that interprets the above coordinates on a real time basis.

Finally,in respect to the above, incase you are selling your car or its written off, they are still the same people to extract the gadget for you from the 'secret' location,at a fee.

I approached one of the providers/sellers armed with the above information. Told them to sell the gadget to me so that I can have my trusted mechanic hide it in the car for me,and they declined. If there is no fishy business here, they could have accepted.

Caution:

Since they are the ones programming the device for you, they never answered me this question: ' How sure am I that you people you will not on a later date come tracking down the simcard you put in the gadget, locate my car and whisk it away?'

Ask the question and see if you'll get a practical answer.

Hope I've made sense

Befriend an engineer at safcom/zain etc. Keep a very cheap fone with long battery life on silent mode hidden somewhere in your car....the fones can be two so yu swap when recharging, the simcard number kept in that phone only be known to you, keep it active by reloading and sambazaing your main line.....gari ikipotea, call your friend engineer and start the trace!!!!!.....cheap huh!!!!!
