Why is it that kenyan universities dont reply e-mails? A friend is intending doing a semester or two, in either Kenyatta University or Nairobi University, as an exchange student but his mails have been going unanswered. This has been happening for the last one. He has even written direct to the heads of Department in both Universities but they dont get back. How can one explain this?

Has your friend tried contacting the universities by phone or post box?

Not really everywhere is like that. My wife works with the Government here ,where we stay and she told me as a government official, she is required to answer every mail in a period not exceeding 5 days upon receiving it. Where i went to University, answering an email is even shortened to three days. Yes he tried calling but no success.

ask your friend to rewrite the mail in a way that suggests that the institution will benefit,
I intend to do a semester or two at your institution as a part requirement for my rich parents foundation to donate a huge sum of cash to your department ...

I think kenyan institutions do not take emails with the seriousness they deserve. In the recent past, I emailed a hotel at the coast to book a room. I never got a reply. And when I turned up at the hotel they told me they were unaware of any communication.

Haiya...kwani which world do I live in? Upto 3-5 days to respond email is acceptable? I never leave an email unanswered for more than a day. In fact, most times it will be within 30mins. For those days you are busy in a whole day meetings or trainings, an auto-response will be clearly in place warning you there will be a delay, mostly of a few hours. Mails are even available on phones these days surely.

its worse when you meet the people you emailed and they start to saying "email yako tuliipata bla bla bla....." after staying several weeks without replying or even acknowledging receipt.

smile but in honesty kenya does not have a strong email tradition, if I may call it that.
mostly because the internet is not that prevalent in the country and it's still a new concep.
