What is the estimate duty + registration and any other charges for a 2004 Subaru Forrester whose cost is 6700USD at IBCJapan? I would like to get a fairly accurate estimate of getting the car on the road here in Kenya.

And if you have experience on their shipping timelines, please let me know. IBC says its typically 3-4 weeks. How reliable are they?

Being a 2004 model Duty is higher and assuming the cost is FOB the landed cost NBI is ksh 594540 approx.

Duty for a 2002 model is around 350k

Thanks @mnjoro and @KenSaf.

You mentioned that duty for a 2002 is about 350K - how is it computed? Is there a site that I can check to compute the duty for a 2004 model?

Check KRA:

Generally speaking ... depreciate 10% for every year from the cost of a brand new forester. Usually KRA has a price list they use for reference when calculating duty. It keeps varying though (I think every week) and is somewhat pegged on the dollar.

If the month of manufacture is beyond 2004 June, consider like you are paying duty for a 2005 model. Thats how KRA works these days. This means, add 10% extra to what estimates you get for a 2004 model. The pre-shipment inspection report states clearly the month of manufacture. If its beyond june its rounded to the next KRA's fiscal year. Thats why you'll be taxed like a 2005 model

@ mnjoro heeee you relook at your maths. You are way too low.

Well duty for Forester 2004 will be about 560K + inland charges.

So ur total cost = 6500 @ 82 = 533,000 + Duty (560,000) + Inland Charges ( ) =

My advice is tafuta 2002 or at the worst 2003 model. I guess you are looking for the Forester new model.

Just tafuta vizuri ull get or u give me kibarua though not for free.

@dexco sorry you misunderstood. My figure was taxes and landed costs not purchase price and freight. So if you add the purchase price we are more less on the same footing.Am an old hand on these

Granted am not in this biz...but from my knowledge...

The minimum duty payable on this type of car is about 345k for an early 2002

model,for a 2004 it will be about 600k.

Thanks all,

Got some info with a guy who has contacts at KRA and was told its actually 681K (much more than the CIF-Mombasa cost of the car) for a 2004 model, quite hefty. As someone advised here, better look for a 2002 model as the duty may be fairer.

I have a Forester XT new Model Silver Auto 2002/3 Arriving in Msa this weekend. I can sell you that for 7000 USD if you are interested. Then u clear for yourself.

@ chaka unless you have a clearing agent who can tell you what he paid last time for a similar car = NO there is no place for calculating that. The calculations are done when you lodge the IDF

@reddevil and all the other gurus on the subject of KRA duty! What would be the duty on a 2003 VW Passat whose landed cost is USD 6,900/-?

@ JKMwatha
I can assist you in clearance of your vehicle.Hola (sentiltd@gmail.com).

@sasha.
You need the month/year of registration and the CC to get the duty value.
