5 cents.

The bat costs $1.05 and the ball costs $0.05:
1.05 + 0.05 = 1.10

This question was in the 31st October issue of the New Scientist magazine on page 38. There were also two other questions printed with it:

If it takes 5 machines 5 minutes to make 5 widgets, how long would it take 100 machines to make 100 widgets?

In a lake, there is a patch of lily pads. Every day the patch doubles in size. If it takes 48 days for the patch to cover the entire lake, how long would it take for the patch to cover half of it?

@Simo, people who usually calculate mentally will first arrive at an answer of $0.10, but wondering why this question was posed, they will then possibly arrive at $0.05.

However, some people who calculate on paper will get the correct answer straight away.

What are the answers for the last two questions?
