Am interested in goin into dairy farming,any one with ideas where i can get good dairy cows and how much they go for?

Any suggestions,advice,personal experiences and comments are invited.

Hi u 1st have to know which breed u need.-ayshire,holstein,jersey. I d recomend the first 2. Ayshire has thicker milk and more versatile while the second has more milk but light m are more susceptible to disease.there is a farm in naiv called marula got good breed but a bit xpe-140k for a served cow.u could also get brokers to search in githunguri but b wary of seller disposin their rejects. I've been interested in dairy farming for a very long time and has done a bit of research; if you have the facilities to keep a minimum of three cows,you are set-up to make above average income for life,I've found it to be the best business to get into.

Critical is how you approach it ... as you are doing,get the best milk cows possible and build the best infrastructure possible ... if you have access to clean water and electricity,that would be great,if not,its ok, Solar panels can do well too,think of a dairy farming ecosystem,with sustainable feed ( green house or something towards that) plan it out,and start with what you can afford and by the time you complete,you'll be pleased ... critical is having a piece of land and labour to do dairy farming. the diary cows go for around 55000 to 90000 around nairobi and kitale.depending with how many calves it has had.and they produce about 16 litres to 35 litres.just email lexy83us@yahoo.com.

we have six on a regular rural township plot ... A friend has about 30 on half acre.

Feeding dairy cattle is one of the most problematic issues,we started as most folks do,just fence-up and get the cows,hoping all else will follow,but that is the most difficult approach ... what you are doing is the best approach; careful and deliberate planning.
We buy hay,get feed from brewaries,whatever you can,at times,it may even make sense to maintain fields at your local elementary school (you seed it first,kids will be happy & you'll be happy),if you have a good grass cutter,domestically you do the best to suppliment,hay,alfafa using cows waste & water. Im thinking of a green house albeit a simple one,but needs water,electricity and a few key impliments. The worst of times is during drought,costs go up and domestic feed yield is quite small. Good feed will cost 100-150 per day/cow.

Someone mentioned to me about farming hay,tell me,how is the business? I have a substantial flat,fertile land,with plenty of water in Kitengela and I’m looking into feasibility of growing hay,can you advise me on -





How do I go about getting the land plowed & graded (just like wheat farm plowing n grading)
What kind of fertilizers can I use to maximize yield
Where do I get the seed for the best feed for dairy cattle
Taking advantage of current seasons / irrigation,how many crops can I fit in one year
What is the yield per acre in number of bundles
What is the average price per bundle over the last two years
And finally,what does it cost you to produce one bundle



I would appreciate insights into these questions,also,do you know of the most practical agricultural college in Kenya,where I can recruit an agricultural cadet DIRECTLY from the university,the particular candidate must be graduating with B. Sc. in Agriculture and must be passionate about agriculture,versatile in both tow & shamba,organized,capable of research budgeting and projections,people oriented...
