KQ plane loses wheel in air but lands safely! Quick questions:
1. Where did the wheel land? 2. What is the weight of the wheel? 3. How much does a wheel cost? they need to replace it!! 4. Is KQ safety at risk?

@Muthawamunene personally i dont think it would affect the price, the plane didnt come down its only a wheel and it landed safely, having said that i think KQ should be more cautious on its safety the issue keeps coming up

KQ Press Release The problem is probably the ground crew in Harare... Folks who are hired are probably 'related' to mugabe & his cronies! I don't think KQ is going to use the same ground crew in Harare! Kenya Airways Statement on KQ 701
Friday January 21, 2011: Kenya Airways would like to inform its passengers, customers, investors and the public of an incident involving flight KQ 701 from Harare. The incident involved a tyre lost in the air after it took off at Harare International Airport. The Boeing 737-300 KQD with 96 passengers and 7 crew landed safely in Nairobi as scheduled at 16.09 local time. JKIA emergency response unit was at hand to receive the aircraft on the runway and was prepared for any eventuality. The passengers and the crew disembarked the aircraft safely without any reported injuries and were debriefed and counseled according to KQ safety and customer service procedure. The incident is being investigated by the Kenya Airways and Kenya Civil Aviation Authority. KQ would like to apologize to the passengers of KQ 701 for any inconveniences caused. In the meantime, Kenya Airways would like to thank all the passengers aboard this flight for their calm and understanding and all its customers for their continued support.

Nice PR from KQ, I once flew KQ and in mid-air we got a serious technical fault after 50 or so minutes of flight, we had to turn back and make an emergency landing, this went unreported and the handling of passengers was so poor. I am glad on how they handled this one, maybe its because it caught the medias attention, nevertheless its good it wasnt fatal and this will not affect the price but KQ has to put its focus on safety

Well, considering the state Zimbabwe is in... who else flies there? At one point Zimbabwe did not allow KQ to repatriate the earnings... Can you imagine the value of the 'income' today especially if the fare [at the time & before dollarization] was collected in Zim$? Anyway, if KQ is serious about Harare... they need to charge more BUT station their own guys there rather than relying on the demoralized airport staff there! Greedy when others are fearful. @ vitu for your information SA (South African Airways) makes two flights to Harare daily...seems there is big business for boers in zim, mostly mining. as for KQ, this plane had flown in from Gaborone (Botswana)...msionee zim... ...besides, the presence of a safe alone does not signify that there is money inside...

as for KQ, this plane had flown in from Gaborone (Botswana)...msionee zim... I betcha SAA has their people [qualified south africans] on the ground in Zim! Lots of private flights from SA go to Harare! BTW, I have flown through Harare [Lusaka-Harare-Nairobi] too but on a nice/newish 777... KQ needs to respond to this asap... I hope they can narrow it down to the station where the problem started [or was not detected]... maybe even Nairobi! Greedy when others are fearful. Hi guys....again havent heard what exactly happened however, this is what I think.
Most airlines use rethreaded tyres. These tend to give way sometimes. What I think could have happened is basically on takeoff from HRE, the threads must have pealed off completely and they were informed of this when they were airborne....again...no biggie...each bogie on the 737-300 has 2 wheels..quite common in the west where there are loads of takeoffs and landings and quite common on our roads as well where u see this 18wheeler shedding thread on 1 wheel....because the tyres(read wheel or undercarriage) are firmly held by several attachments(bolts, nuts, cables, pipes etc) so i dont reckon it was the wheel itself but just the thread...Media houses should get expert opinions before posting stuff on their papers... Disclaimer: purely my own opinion...haven't heard anything official
