That social health contribution thing does not go down well with me.I cannot trust NHIF & there is no way to hold them accountable.How many times do you hear the name NHIF in scandals?
Truth is.....that 2k/month will pay for unnecessary tenders and the money will eventually wind up in a few rich people's pockets.It does not matter what promises they give or how many leaflets they print.
Social equity is not about punishing the middle & upper class and dragging them down to the bottom of the pyramid.....its about giving the lower class some affirmative action that pushes them into middle class.When you levy a mandatory 2k/month on someone who is already getting a 2Milli cover from AAR or Resolution....aren't you punishing them in the name of helping the lower class?Wendz?

Unfortunately, its the same as tax. the more you earn, the more you pay, even if the level of security is the same for all (unless you go back to your pocket and pay for private security), pay govt teachers that your children never get to use and you use the same roads regardless of how much you pay in tax. Its unfair but thats how state gets money to give services for public good. And in all this, the middle class pays for it.... the rich hardly get to feel the pinch.

Well you are quite right Wendz.I guess all I can say is that I don't support the move.Personally.
Formally employed people often live their employers' dream & forget about their own.

@Wendz,
Thanks for the very useful link to the tender document. It fills some of the information gaps in the whole scheme and sheds some light on issues I have personally been struggling with.

The problem I have with the whole scheme is that it is short on details. I may start paying Kshs 2k a month (Kshs 24K) a year and this is money with which I can get a pretty good cover elsewhere with a provider who understands what customer service really is. What do I get in return for my 24K? Some vague promises to get OP service and enhance IP benefits with no one telling me where, or how. I fear that it may be at Mathare, KNH,or some other hospital with no drugs and an even worse staff attitude (if you have been treated at a gava hospital you may know what I am talking about).

NHIF will do itself a big favour by releasing more details on the scheme including benefits, hospitals, limits, terms and conditions Etc. If well thought out, and if access and financing is through the proposed capitation system, the scheme may actually work!! Members should however be allowed to select preferred providers from the list of accredited hopsitals - otherwise I may be capitated to Mbagathi hosp which would be equivalent to having no cover at all. The issue for me is details, details and more details...

What I see however, is NHIF and a certain gava minister bulldozing the issue without addressing very real concerns which Kenyans have. To quote the good professor, ''the government has no business consulting anyone...'' jameni!!!
Great men are not always wise, neither do the aged understand judgement...

@robinhood and others.Issues being raised abt the rates n benefits to be accrued are real.Health unlike other services like education,water and roads is complicated.no research to surport this but most pple who earns >75K have a private cover.the so called unlimited primary OPD healthcare services being promised by the NHIF,is not beneficial to this group.the move by NHIF will only double their medical costs with no additional benefits.
The other problem s that OPD services they are promising is limited to the scope provided for in the contract docs.
Each member wil be expected to register with only one service provider.A service provider can only enlist so many members as wil be allowed in the contract.this is inflexible n getting a second opinion will be expensive.
NHIF as an institution lacks the technology and capacity to run the fund.If the Gvt cn allocate 80 billion for dev projs,why cnnt they allocate 20billion towards a compehensive health reforms.
